The writer presents both theological and educational theory as the basis for the thesis. He participated in a congregation involved in an extensive program of social service and taught two groups concerning the nature and mission of the church. The purpose of the classes was to help members develop more understanding of the church in general and of the outreach program of their own congregation in particular. The writer hoped to encourage class members toward more intentional church membership (discipleship). There was some evidence that greater understanding did occur; the follow-up of the teaching did not provide opportunity to observe whether more intentional membership resulted. Through analysis of variance, it was determined that there were significant differences between officer and enlisted families in two areas, which were Intellectual-Cultural Orientation and Control, and that there were differences approaching statistical significance in the areas of Conflict and Active Recreational Orientation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791125908342439936,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:19:36.236Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:15:24Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:36:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7db1b384-e8d5-45c9-b9fd-76b1cfced3c7","accessControl_ssim":["da00bba4-4bc3-4b13-a2ab-f4f2f27029d6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Deciding for responsible behavior: a curriculum designed for teaching moral education at the United States Recruit Training Command"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:15:23Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:50:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1a80c61a-afb5-4437-b32d-03be6a73f65e"],"hasLease_ssim":["022cc491-4579-4f9e-9426-9a67cde010e5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["L Howard Grimes"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William L Patrick"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Values","Human behavior","Rest, James R","Military chaplains","Moral education","Decision making--Moral and ethical aspects","Kohlberg, Lawrence, 1927-1987"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to design a curriculum for teaching moral education in the United States Recruit Training Command. During their eight weeks of training, eighty recruits were exposed to four sessions with the chaplain in which a modified approach to Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of cognitive moral education was used as the educational structure and method. The recruits were pre-tested and post-tested with the Defining Issues Test developed by James R. Rest. Stage levels of moral development were determined in the pre-test and used by the chaplain in lesson preparation. The stage levels were compared with the post-test in an attempt to determine moral development during recruit training. The development consisted first in researching existing programs of clergy evaluation in the United States both Roman Catholic and Protestant. Secondly, the project involved psychological preparation of priests for the possibility of ministerial performance evaluation. Priests were personally interviewed in a stratified, random sampling. They also did a time-study or functions survey as to how they spend their time in ministry. Three kinds of instruments for evaluation were designed: self evaluation, peer evaluation, and lay evaluation. The process for evaluation includes the assistance of a third party, priest confidant who gathers and interprets all of the responses. The program was adopted by the Diocese of Cleveland. Other dioceses and denominations might also benefit from it."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128321310851072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:57:57.422Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:15:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:49:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b2bc5a9b-7989-46e7-80af-761a25a20372","accessControl_ssim":["6e94b429-0ecf-460a-953e-48b14d9e2b2b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Living the Christian faith in artistic creations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:15:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d1d85ec3-8fc1-49f4-a4e3-1609b6347142"],"hasLease_ssim":["29b9988d-87a4-4192-b5cc-0c2169f2f5fd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Donald Freeman"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
