It proposed to examine how men and women within a congregation perceived women's role in an effort to identify, clarify, and change attitudes for mutual ministry. The vehicle for this research used a dialectical methodology of combined biblical studies and social science methods. The expectation of the hypothesis was that significant changes in attitudes would take place. Three members of the Rochester Friends Meeting were interviewed twice: once in 1979 and again in 1981. The open-ended interviews were designed to provide sufficient information to locate the individuals in their respective faith stages. In addition, the history of New York Yearly Meeting was examined in the context of Fowler's stages to establish the modal context of the Society. The modal context of the Yearly Meeting was seen as Stage 4, with individuals interviewed spread in Stages 3, 4, and 5. The individual in Stage 3 was the birthright member of the Society, while the other two joined as adults. Although conclusions cannot be drawn on such a small study, it is speculated that the structures of the Society do not impel a person's development beyond Stage 3. Apparently, other life events must provide the stimulus for development. The mode of Stage 4 for New York Yearly Meeting seems largely to result from the preponderence of adult members who have joined the Society rather than being built into faith-nurturing structures."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717521955225600,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:19:37.475Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:14:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:44:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fd67164a-7399-4af5-8dc1-c0841ee156d3","accessControl_ssim":["04c1c368-e310-4ca4-adb7-db054579351e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The black alcoholic in and out of the black church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:14:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:22:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9762c063-1316-494c-9f06-91517a0e657a"],"hasLease_ssim":["06a279bf-1f19-4512-b21f-0a8eff07d7e9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Boston University"],"advisor_tesim":["Merle R Jordan"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert G Murray"],"publisher_tesim":["Boston University School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Temperance","Families--Religious life","Homicide","African Americans--Religion","Slavery","Alcoholism","Pastoral counseling","Alcohol"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project is to effectively raise the consciousness level of the Black community to the reality that alcoholism is a disease of epidemic proportion in the Black community, and to outline the ways the Black church can combat and eliminate this problem. Alcoholism is described as 'a chronic illness, psychic or psychosomatic, which manifests itself as a disorder of behavior,' and 'that exceeds customary dietary use of compliance with social customs of the community and that interferes with the drinker's health, or the social or economic functioning.' it is America's number four health problem, but Black America's number one health and social problem. In the chapter 'From the Roots to the Vines,' the project analyzes the use of alcohol in pre-colonial Africa as a convivial beverage for celebration and how the Triangle Trade became 'a geometrical maze' for Blacks with slavery, alcohol, and profits as partners. The drinking pattern for slaves was very ambiguous for they were prohibited by law from drinking because it made them rebellious, but were encouraged to drink because it made them docile."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Boston University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["2d58bd09-76d0-4970-b257-d55229e0173e"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715292480274432,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:44:11.282Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:14:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:35:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0d2ee163-34a4-4b01-982e-e930047bb5d2","accessControl_ssim":["0404e2b9-442e-4525-a667-3c9f01419de5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A strategy for counseling through preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:14:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:29:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0edd4a93-d29c-4311-a862-e9ef76d9bd21"],"hasLease_ssim":["21c5b3b0-fbb3-41ab-8787-73f6233a680e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Boston University"],"advisor_tesim":["Homer L Jernigan"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Edwin H Moyer"],"publisher_tesim":["Boston University School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Group counseling","Prayer","Pastoral theology","Sermons","Preaching","Christian life","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project was designed to integrate preaching and pastoral care ministries so that the sermon might be a therapy instrument for congregation members. The project sought through preaching to focus on needs expressed by the audience, understanding that responsive communication might exist between pulpit and pew, even without verbal exchange. The report outlines biblical and theological bases for the concept of counseling through preaching. Methodology entailed determination of issues people wanted addressed; preparation of sermons based on those concerns and summarizing feedback received by several means.
