It questions whether a new humanity occurs when one is united with Christ and if so, the character of that new life. This concern grew out of the pastoral and personal experience of the author who sought to understand the church's claim of a new order of human existence when one is in Christ stated in Paul's assertion that 'if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come' (2 Cor 5:17). This 'new creation' manifesting itself in a 'new humanity' is the controlling motif of the thesis. The biblical foundations of this concept are examined in the writings of Paul. Critical and systematic explication is based on the existential categories of Paul Tillich; the eschatological dimensions of hope in Juergen Moltmann; and in the theologies of liberation. Psychologically, Carl Jung's concept of 'individuation' and Abraham Maslow's 'self-actualization' are considered. Being 'in Christ' creates a transformed humanity. The new existence dictates the character of the 'new humanity' now characterized by a new sense of the possible, freedom and responsibility."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719763300057088,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:55:14.988Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:27:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:50:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e0221ded-0e96-4666-8a1f-734dcd33cea3","accessControl_ssim":["1e8cb11a-3443-4fc0-9df1-85f6c7a74b0f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Factors contributing to the rejection of formerly-held beliefs"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:27:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8fc6ad8e-7398-46c8-a1f6-29f066e0e993"],"hasLease_ssim":["34557bc5-e65c-4b2e-91d8-e96bd81f6c58"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Gordon E Jackson"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Research shows an emerging theme of family idolatry. This idolatry is contrasted with a demystified appreciation of the family's normal experience of crises. With this as prolegomena, and from the author's personal and pastoral experience, a six-principle definition of family wholeness is developed. Preventable family crises are defined, and a framework for prevention of these crises is described. Application of family idolatry and wholeness themes is made to the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130472220196864,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:32:08.689Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:27:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:37:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"965efb93-a0c4-46a9-bacc-1ada6bfe348b","accessControl_ssim":["df661204-f345-4a8e-b541-a12dd7a8e40a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A program for adult Christian education in Liberia"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:27:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:31:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ca249ad4-96e6-4855-b0e9-219ecd2120e1"],"hasLease_ssim":["949bcfaf-173a-457c-930f-e369c320f745"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard T Murray"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"location_tesim":["Liberia"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Daniel Sasaro Brewer"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Single parents","Families--Religious life","Christian education of adults","Education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project develops an adult Christian education program to minister to a West African church. Initially there is a study of four exorcism stories in Mark and an evaluation of data from contemporary philosophical, psychological and theological works. The research was conducted in visits with three United Presbyterian congregations in Oklahoma. Groups of church leaders and members were interviewed relative to their experiences of alienation while members of local congregations. The interviews provide five case studies for demonstrating dehumanizing forces within local churches. To counter such forces, the author offers a management theory through which members ground their ministry in spiritual disciplines and act on principles of relationships.
