This study concerns itself with the historical background of the country, the mission agencies, and the evolutionary process that brought us to where we are today.  This relationship, i.e., three mission agencies associated with one national church, suggests itself as a model for others to consider.  Although it is not without its flaws, it continues to serve as an acceptable vehicle for evangelization. Other models of a partnership nature are considered for comparison.  Certain cultural factors in the development of leadership styles are looked at. For these gifts to be effectively utilized in service, the church itself must be structured for employing the spiritual gifts of members.  I drafted a theology of spiritual gifts and a philosophy of ministry regarding spiritual gifts.  I guided the church leadership in drafting an official church position regarding the operation of spiritual gifts within the congregation.  In addition, job descriptions were drafted.  A series of sermons was designed to assist the church in understanding spiritual gifts and discovering gifts each possessed. A written survey of other pastors was conducted.  Through this instrument I sought the experiences and suggestions of those leading similar churches in New Jersey. The project also seeks to affirm laity in the process of ministerial formation. Research was done in an attempt to answer this question.  The proper church officials and the church's ministry are identified in twelve church groups. This dissertation/project assists in meeting this need by producing a set of presuppositions for Christian initiation composed of theological assumptions, goals and guidelines for use in designing a programme of education for Christian initiation for youth and adults within the United Church of Canada.  The first obvious question, 'do any other denominations have good programmes available?' led to a study of some samples of selected mainline Canadian and American churches.
