The project employs three home visits and nine group sessions to investigate the depth of marital conversation, marital dynamics, developmental histories, ethical issues of family life and faith issues arising from pastoral involvement. The research notes increased capacity to communicate and to reflect on ethical issues. The participants use group study methods to explore their theology of visitation as it is reflected in their image of ministry and the church.  They explore such aspects of the visitation environment as location, listening skills, awareness of agendas and time management. At the end of the course the participants construct and implement a program of pastoral visitation which is evaluated after four weeks.  The study gives a greater understanding of pastoral visitation. The first step is to interview personnel in the health field and persons in related fields such as funeral directors, cemetery sextons and even those who sell grave markers.  It is important to obtain input of persons who work with the terminally ill. The second step is to gather all interviewed persons for a planning meeting.  Their support will help to establish the program.  The third step is to establish a committee to express the concerns and commitment of the larger group. These words describe the dynamics which occur in pastoral care visits with older people.  The project states a brief definition of each word as a pastoral care concept.  It conducts a biblical word study and, through a questionnaire, asks peers in ministry (chaplains, visitation pastors, students) to critique the validity of the proposed approach. The project concludes that many old paradigms of preaching are still valid and should be reclaimed and mastered but new paradigms also are needed for this day.
