The project included three stages: making teachers more aware of their present teaching techniques; offering suggestions through a workshop experience for improving on those techniques; and by determining what changes took place in the teachers' presentation and methodology. Results included a demonstrated change in lay leadership which provided key elements in the program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Lesson plans and theological content are given for a course to train liturgical catechists. Students attended lectures on the theology of church, spirituality, and the poor.  Speakers were invited to describe ministries to the poor.  Students selected ministries and received supervision at poverty sites.  A questionnaire was designed to reveal any attitudinal changes in students' perceptions of church, spirituality, and the poor resulting from the course 'Experiences in Ministry.' This  thesis is biographical in style as it tells the story of a people, a parish, and a process that gave birth to smaller communities of faith. Considerable attention is given to the core group who was primarily responsible for the study and formation of the base communities. Project objectives center in 'active listening' and 'I' messages undergirded by two biblical principles.  Eight training sessions, two hours per session, are conducted during a period of two months with five couples participating.  Subjective and objective evaluations are conducted. 'Active listening' becomes established practice for nine of ten participants. Attitude change allows participants to listen with empathy and respond without judgement or criticism.
