Ministry with Hmong by forty-one churches in central California and Twin Cities, Minnesota are analyzed.  The Hmong language questionnaire reveals Hmong church leaders' preference for gradual acculturaltion, compared with English language questionnaires expecting rapid assimilation/integration/adaptation.  The author documents the effects of forty centuries of forced migration and dislocation and resettlement of the Hmong, and argues for acculturation of Hmong by multi-lingual, transcultural congregations. Special attention is given to a research-action project of the Alban Institute.  Insights of three area ministers (denominational personnel who serve as resources to local churches and pastors) concerning matters of long tenure are then summarized from interviews.  The main body of the work involves case studies of five pastors whose tenure in a given location has been from 7 to 14 years.  Written materials provided by each are examined and compared, after which highlights from personal interviews are reported. Contemporary fasting practices in the Orthodox church are discussed in terms of the social history of Orthodox jurisdictions in the United States and the effects of a number of social factors on pastoral issues in Orthodox spirituality.  The paper also reports an empirical study of the effects of fasting combined with prayer or prayer alone on subjects who were either regular fasters or who did not normally fast. Non-fasters following a regimen of fasting and prayer reported improvements in their general spiritual lives. The dissertation examines relevant literature in three areas: urbanization and its relationship to the Sydney Anglican Church, the history of the Sydney Anglican Church, and the development of a congregational theology of church in Sydney Anglicanism. Case studies of four Sydney Anglican churches test the findings of the literature. Recent literature raises questions about indissolubility and the nature of premarital counseling for second nuptials. Regarding indissolubility, the Catholic priest must be pastoral and ecclesial.  Regarding pastoral preparation for second nuptials, the priest integrates a number of roles. Unique concerns in second nuptials are grief, guilt, building a new family, personal limitations of bride and groom, and spirituality in remarriage.
