Its purpose was to engage people of faith in significant encounters with the other, as presented through these different communities of faith.  Elements of the study included lectures about the history and founding personalities of the religions; class discussion and personal sharing; experiences with food; meetings with spiritual leaders and believers; and opportunities of worship from each tradition.  In addition we received materials and documents pertinent to our own faith tradition. To fulfill its call, the local congregation must be intentional about its ministry.  The church must become a center for developing servant and caring discipleship.  By expecting people to care, challenging them to care, and providing opportunities to care, the local congregation can help persons grow in faith and become a powerful witness for Jesus Christ. The community of faith was by God's design to be an inclusive community.  The growing ethnic diversity in our society today presents a challenge to the local congregation to be intentional in its ministry to incorporate people of diverse cultural and racial experiences into its fellowship.  A congregation to be successful in building an inclusive ministry must first begin to value diversity as a gift of God.  The local congregation can begin to appreciate the ethnic diversity of its members as a gift of God through Bible study, small group sharing, and sermons. This purpose was accomplished by the development of an instrument which was applied in four local church settings.  The instrument contains sixteen statements related to interpersonal communication in the local parish.  Each pastor involved was to complete a self-evaluation and compare that evaluation with those completed by selective members of the congregation. The method included a review of the church's discipline utilizing questionnaires and interviews with the cabinet and pastors.
