To support this thesis, the author draws upon numerous trips to the Holy Land, participation in an archaeological dig, and historical research.  He presents a variety of resources by which the land can be made more 'real' to people of the parish. Theological reflections are provided for a theology of a bereavement.  A liturgy preparation guide and a parish support group are outlined.  Conclusions from pastoral interviews and presentations are cited. A selective review of relevant literature dealing with medical, psychological, and theological facets of the disorder was conducted, and a case study was discussed.  Person-centered therapy supplemented by techniques which were congruent and appropriate from other modalities was indicated in treatment. The author analyzes this therapeutic situation by utilizing the resources of material on child abuse, the resulting pain of being abused as a child, theology, psychotherapy, and the story of Jesus meeting the woman at the well in the Gospel of John 4:7-21.  The author determines that a pastoral counselor must address and be in the process of working through his or her past abusive experiences before counseling with counselees who have also been abused as children.  The author creatively uses the images of a counseling well, water, houses, and abandoned fireplaces to bring the pain and the journey of recovery alive in this pastoral counseling setting. In conclusion, the changed historical context of today, as well as apathy, ignorance, and limited endorsement by clergy limit the thesis. This research/action/reflection model examines one rural parish in-depth, and three other churches in moderate detail, as they move to address their transitional circumstances and position themselves for future ministry via a deliberate planning process.  Three theses with regard to future planning summarize the author's findings: the role of the pastor; authority and power for planning; and membership consensus of mission and future vision. It is the thesis of the project to show how the works of these two persons, when correlated, create an effective model for the pastoral counselor.  The paper outlines the theory of Winnicott who was a member of the British school of object relations.
