The pastors were married men in their late twenties or early thirties. Most had some form of formal pastoral training, half having completed seminary. All found pastoring to be satisfying. This approach is reflected in the patristic literature: in sermons, discourses, commentaries, and in theological works. It is further reflected in certain aspects of social policy in the Byzantine Empire and in attempts, by the Byzantines, to mitigate social injustices by works of 'philanthropia.' Unfortunately, a biased historiography has ignored this teaching and its history, though they retain their validity and form a foundation for the Eastern Christian understanding of social justice. This investigation seeks to uncover what has been hidden with regard to patristic teachings on wealth and poverty, and to apply this patristic material, along with the historical, economical, social, political, and theological background of Christian Byzantine life, to instruction in the Eastern church community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716629144141824,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:05:26.023Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:53:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:44:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"04c24a72-ae86-4e89-b0a7-4bce6f420467","accessControl_ssim":["ef9b040d-1ce7-45f1-b668-01e775c0a458"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Dynamics of religious revolution: history and theology of the Philippine Independent Church with implications for renewal"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:53:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:15:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["13e3a595-2105-4a1a-afcc-7c8feeb15b90"],"hasLease_ssim":["76a50e7b-67de-401b-a757-d0ea4ea8b8f0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis R Rambo"],"year_tesim":["1990"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Fred Vergara"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["History","Iglesia Filipina Independiente","Religion and culture"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Philippine Independent Church, with about 5 million members, has a glorious history. At the time of its schism from the Roman Catholic church in the Philippines, it received tremendous support from the Filipino masses who saw it to be the embodiment of their religious and political aspirations. In the Philippines, culture and religion, and church and society are inextricably intertwined. The history of the Philippine Independent Church cannot be understood apart from the history of the Filipino people. It is a history of continuous struggle for freedom, identity, and sovereignty. The Filipinos were colonized by Spain for over 300 years, by the United States for 50 years, and was occupied by Japan for 4 years. Throughout its colonial history, the Philippines experienced revolts and uprisings culminating in the Revolution of 1896-1898. The Philippine Independent Church became known as the lone tangible product of the Revolution of 1898 and symbol of the continuing struggle for freedom."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715317642952704,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:44:35.279Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:53:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:19:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0878709e-b082-4736-b9fe-671dd09cee7a","accessControl_ssim":["0ecc93ff-b944-4d28-ba60-1f89b64b4f36"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A model of negotiable strategies in ministry of burnout among pastors and congregations in the United Church of Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:53:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:21:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3594b76f-564a-4117-8364-9145c2bc9e50"],"hasLease_ssim":["a18fa135-8b3e-47e3-911b-24026a40a44b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David B Bowman"],"year_tesim":["1990"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Louis R Taylor"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Mental health","Pastoral theology--United Church of Christ","Clergy","United Church of Christ","Congregations"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["There is a deep need to develop some real answers to the pain and confusion that eventuate from pastoral burnout.
