The author, from research and personal experience, offers pastoral care guidelines in understanding the illness, in identification of the mentally ill, and in ministering to the mentally ill persons and their families. Four components, a survey of Christian married adults, a survey of Christian singles, a study of the scriptural teachings regarding marriage, and a study of family therapy, psychological, and counseling resources furnished the specific objectives for pastoral premarital counseling. The Twelve Steps offer a spirituality which has often caused confusion along confessional Lutherans.  Methodology involved interviewing Lutheran alcoholics, non-alcoholic Lutherans and clergy. The Twelve Steps were evaluated according to law and gospel. A brief study of the influence of American civil religion and two kingdom theology gave a backdrop in which to place the Twelve Steps. While many of the existing models of intervention are useful and worthwhile, this thesis will suggest that certain key ingredients are sometimes avoided or neglected in an attempt to move quickly toward a satisfactory resolution of a problem. Effective problem solving, especially when dealing with a difficult person, cannot always be reduced to a simple step-by-step approach.  The purpose of this thesis will be to explore and present another option for dealing with the presence of a difficult person that is both biblical and practical. This bibliographic study examines the history, beliefs, and practices of fifteen important new sects with special emphasis on their worldview within the historical context of Japanese religions.  It is the author's thesis that although the new religions appear modern in form, they remain essentially animistic. His view of this overall spiritual process incorporates elements of both particular crises and processes and is 'systemic' in nature, involving cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions of human experience.  This project of ten weekly two-hour small group learning experiences employed pretest and both immediate and delayed posttest evaluations of participants' understanding.  While not statistically confirmed because of the limited number of participants, the findings point clearly to laypersons' ability to grasp comprehensively sanctification's meaning. A structured 'process conflict resolution' course was developed that combined object relations and family systems theories as the content for identifying conflict.  The research involved a college and church group to compare and determine the effect of the course on the two populations. Data for the final evaluation were gathered from a pre- and post-conflict mode test and 'describe yourself' paragraph. The results were statistically compiled.
