The definition of 'pastor' as leader of the congregation is often defined by what he does rather than who he is. It is the thesis of this paper that the pastor as leader must be a confessor, a spiritual witness to the gospel which he/she proclaims. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's writings are utilized as ministry and congregational roles are explored. Also, various twentieth-century theologians and secular authors are cited for the study. In a new paradigm, listening to children and their experiences of the presence of God is central. Research included reading based on stage theory, and material that critiques it, proposing other models for spiritual formation; interviews with children in Christian education classes; observation of Montessori classrooms; and incorporating some new models into parish ministry. Children welcome the opportunity to talk about their experiences, their beliefs, and their questions about God, and to teach adults who listen and take them seriously."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133511064748032,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:20:26.757Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:58:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:19:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3bb46709-50a6-4902-a441-8a0e66e8f013","accessControl_ssim":["7aec80aa-1e1c-4dcd-ad59-1180a2367818"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Linkages: a systematic theology based on Luther's large catechism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:58:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:51:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b2b96542-bc08-4ba7-89ad-df11c9ef6ffa"],"hasLease_ssim":["dd52aab5-8013-45ee-920f-384494b453df"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert W Bertram"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael G Brecke"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Theology, Doctrinal","Theology, Lutheran"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project/dissertation is an attempt to link the tradition to current theological issues while maintaining tension between law and gospel. Engaging preaching attends to a network of relationships including God, the text, the preacher, and the congregation. Four genres are examined as vehicles for engagement: the narrative, the character sketch, the group study, and the monologue. Results indicate the congregation experiences a positive degree of engagement when the preacher attends to connected relationships. Genres effect engagement by offering distinctive listening experiences.
