Current missionary activities in Japan are examined.  A survey was conducted on the teaching of missiology in Japanese seminaries.  Both surveys confirmed the need to establish a clearer understanding of evangelical missiology in Japan.  David J Hesselgrave's textbook, Today's choices for tomorrow's mission, is evaluated as being the best choice among missiological texts for Japanese Christians.  The question whether a dynamic equivalent translation is better than a formal translation is discussed. Fourth, some hermeneutical principles will be considered.  The fifth issue will deal with the influence of this movement upon the charismatic movement. A program of four gatherings with the leadership in nine local churches was pursued during fall 1992.  Seven of the churches were younger than ten years.  Two were older churches.  The author used three different surveys among the leaders and members.  Any increase in cooperation in terms of objective growth was not possible to measure. However, the author found new insights regarding existing weaknesses in the fellowship. The senior pastor chose a team of five laypersons to help design an eight-week course based around a manual/workbook. Included is a theological study based on the biblical model of shepherding.  It also contains the social change theory needed to assist the congregants to accept a lay-pastoral care paradigm. Questions were grouped according to personal information (sex, age, marriage status, family, income, temperament), education information (schools attended and feelings about their value, along with suggestions of what was good and what needed improvement), and church information (about one's current ministry).  Two conclusions are that pastors want seminaries to continue to offer the classics (Bible, theology), but to add more practical training. Some of the topics taught were organizational structure, qualifications of a good leader, starting a Royal Rangers outpost, leading boys to Christ, dealing with problems, campcrafts, planning a successful meeting, teaching aids and techniques of communications.
