The project presents data on the health of African Americans, forms an ecumenical clergy health council, determines the theological foundation, creates congregational health ministries, assesses each congregation's health status, and implements health education classes. Five congregations (United Methodist, United Church of Christ, Baptist, nondenominational, and Disciples of Christ) from Chicago and Lansing, Michigan, studied current trends in stewardship, salaries and benefits for clergy and lay staff, and outreach ministries.  The project developed new stewardship programs to encourage these congregations to re-establish themselves as servants to their communities. From this research the project derives a taxonomy of preaching abilities undergirded by Alverno College's approach to assessment, including a sophisticated listener-response instrument. The project evaluated the effectiveness of the CPE program at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Long Beach, California, considering benefits--spiritual, educational, and financial--for each group involved in the medical center. By using CPE students in its medical centers the Department of Veterans Affairs could provide an effective spiritual ministry at relatively little cost to the institution.  The project administered a questionnaire to 110 patients, chaplains, medical center employees, and CPE students, seeking to measure perceived benefits of a CPE program. More than 70,000 persons visited the church in 1995, and its varied use by community groups and agencies, its status on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980, and its preparation to become a National Historic Landmark are indications that the 15 September 1963 bombing of the church has changed its ministry. Five members of TCC attended six seminars over a two-year period, learning philosophy and methods of disciple-making, church growth, and project management. The project then monitored the church's progress through surveys and attendance records.
