This project concentrates on three growing churches in Saigon--An-Dong, Tran Cao Van and Truong Minh Giang--to attempt to discover reasons and factors that have enabled these churches to grow under Communist oppression from 1975 to 1983.  The project includes a short, critical review of the history of Protestantism in Vietnam and a discussion of various forms of Communist persecution of religion, citing the positive and negative effects on the Protestant church. The project determined needs, designed a program, and enlisted a control group and an experimental group.  The control group received the training.  The program was evaluated using descriptive evaluations, a pretest-posttest design, and critical reflection. The project analyzes congregational innovations that blend what is central to Reformed worship with liturgical styles from the 'creative,' 'praise and worship,' and 'high liturgical' traditions, using a participant-observer study method.  The underlying theological and liturgical question raised by each blended liturgy centers around the Reformed notion of 'freedom in form.' How much freedom is allowable? How much form is required? The project also explores effects of imaginal preaching on a pastor called to preach faithfully in the midst of change.  Imaginal preaching, when linked with a congregational process of mission development, has transformative power to shape present and future congregational identity and function. Three black pastors helped to create an interview protocol that could explore and define the black church tradition in the UCC. The interviews analyzed the pastor's context in ministry, authorization for ministry, Sunday morning worship practices, preaching, music, communion, baptism, special days, and printed resources used in worship. The reports reveal a remarkably consistent worship practice that reflects the black, 'rural' worship tradition of this region.  A central ritual act of nearly all churches in the study is believer's baptism by immersion. The project offers a framework for understanding ministry through use of metaphor. Beginning with the premise that language creates and shapes worldviews and that metaphor in particular is a powerful means of expression, the project explores various works pertaining to metaphor and then moves to analysis of metaphors that have been operative in the life of one local church.  These metaphors not only provide a foundation for a common language and common understanding of the congregation, but they also provide a strong means for shifting away from metaphors of constriction and creating new metaphors.
