None is more essential than shame.  Survivors need help in moving out from trauma and humiliation to celebrate goodness and right to joy. After presenting some psychological and theological foundations of shame, this project explores various treatment modalities and presents combined treatment (individual and group therapy with the same therapist) as a powerful tool to identify and treat shame. Clinical data prove the effectiveness of this modality. Secular research has been skeptical of relationships between religion and personal and family life.  The doctrine of the Trinity provides a theological basis for this study. Assessment instruments (SFI and SWBS) indicate that a population of healthy to midrange families with preference for a centripetal style of functioning report high levels of spiritual, religious, and existential well-being. Significant, positive correlations exist between perceptions of family system and perceptions of spiritual well-being. The project reviewed current literature and interviewed a corporate personnel director and chaplain assignment officers from the US Air Force and US Navy.  The Army Chaplain School administered a questionnaire to Basic and Advanced students, and chaplain colonels completed a similar questionnaire at a senior chaplains' conference. Denominational polity is a critical factor, especially in the initial phases of a chaplain's career.  The army's accession and assignment processes are 'closed,' as in an episcopal polity, but most chaplains come from denominations that are not 'closed.' Chaplains from 'open' clergy placement systems have less positive attitudes toward the army system. This project studies church growth literature, and books and articles written for small churches, conferences papers, and interviews with consultants to define a role for small suburban churches in a megachurch environment.  A small church can target those persons who still prefer small churches. It also addresses distribution and copyright laws.
