However, with the numerous changes in the total social order, the Black family and the Black church have discovered that counteracting these destructive forces has become very complicated. The situation reflected across the church is that clergy and vestries are not always prepared and equipped to plan and set goals with confidence that they are acting consistently with what they believe God is calling the congregation to be and to do. In response to this perceived need, I have developed a design that is structured to encourage and enable discernment and planning by congregations. This project has been advanced by the knowledge that many among the clergy and congregations in our diocese clearly recognize the importance of scheduling time apart from regular daily demands in order to listen for the voice of the Lord through a structured process as they plan for the future. Theological concepts that God speaks to his people, leading and guiding them, undergirded this project. Biblical references substantiating that the Lord speaks to his people were incorporated throughout the process. Psychological concepts that informed the thesis included the awareness and application of systems theory as presented by Dr. Edwin Friedman and the Rev. Peter L. Steinke. This theory was particularly helpful in recognizing behavior associated with the prospect of change and the anticipated increase in anxiety. My operative thesis for this act of ministry is that planning should be done using a guided, structured, theologically grounded process, and that the process should be led by an outside resource person, a consultant."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717276495118336,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:15:43.386Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:46:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:53:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"efa7f61d-21a8-4790-a496-5ff94c0673f8","accessControl_ssim":["5dc5f83d-855b-4bca-803d-ca17f7fe09e6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Christology from the margins and generation X: practical guidelines for the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:46:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:58:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["79db3c0b-e9da-45e8-ad44-df4009411723"],"hasLease_ssim":["78452c76-d914-44bc-8f77-888209b84682"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Norman D Pott"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Thomas E Virts"],"keyword_tesim":["Feminist theology"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Liberation theology","Evangelistic work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The study brings together the concerns of Generation X, the Christological images of the Christian church, and the practices of the suburban church. The impact of surgery, the effect of anesthetic, and complications in the healing process were explored. Patients saw their surgery not just as an isolated event, but as part of their life experience. Most interesting are the ways in which patients compensate for the troubling, frightening, and chaotic aspects of their experience, reminding us that, above all, this is a human experience involving love, care, laughter, sensitivity, hope, being there, trust, calming, sharing the suffering and connecting with what we believe in beyond ourselves."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721729470234624,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:26:30.074Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":442,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
