The purpose of this study is to identify and describe the characteristics and processes of Nominations and Personnel Committees in United Methodist Churches of the Alabama-West Florida Annual Conference selected for their perceived strength in mobilizing laity participation and leadership. The study addresses the Nominations process in two groups of churches. The study sought to discover if significant differences existed between the Nominations process in churches that were recognized as having active lay participation and leadership and other churches of the Annual Conference. A further question the study sought to answer was that of the correlation between well-organized Nominations and Personnel committees and active lay leadership and participation. Additionally, the study sought to identify other factors that might influence the level of lay participation and leadership in those churches that were perceived as showing strength in that area of church life. Data for the study was gathered by means of a researcher developed, self-administered survey mailed to the local pastors of the churches in both study groups. The survey instrument, Nominations and Personnel Committee (NomCom) Characteristics Survey, consisted of an eight page, ninety-five question inventory which addressed organizational and relational aspects of the nomination process within the local church. The questions were predominately closed-ended. The study revealed real differences existing between the two subject groups, one of which exhibited a stronger sense of purpose in ministry, and more careful attention to the procedural elements of their work within the Nominations and Personnel committee. Data from the study also indicated that a correlation exists between the utilization of the Nominations and Personnel committee in the local church and the strength of lay leadership and activity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134649967181824,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:38:32.898Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:42:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:42:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"25a7f7c4-dca2-448a-b5af-cb6ff9244c05","accessControl_ssim":["b9ad5b73-79b9-4fd9-9a75-bd9b86c96f5a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A theology of hope: a paradigm for ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:42:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:14:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3df70eb8-f86e-4fcf-bd57-f9fc235c3862"],"hasLease_ssim":["249ade5d-a3d9-468e-aae2-0504d92ed277"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Brian W Grant"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Larry Wayne Smith"],"publisher_tesim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Hope","African Americans--Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This doctor of ministry project is a study of hope as it relates to the church and clinical setting. More than 44,000 Baby Boomers live in the county; at least 30,000 are unchurched. The proposed strategy is based upon six valid and transferable principles drawn from existing literature and the successful programs of other churches. It met with varying degrees of acceptance by members of the Moline Seventh-day Adventist church, and with little success in reaching out to Baby Boomers. The major hindrance to the project's success is the inability to elicit commitment from the members or to mobilize active support for the strategy by the host church. A major change in organizational methodology such as this requires significant time, careful planning and implementation, and a sense of urgency that the changes are needed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andrews University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4b1d9df2-25d6-46f6-a889-1871c277d61c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135240786280448,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:47:56.348Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:41:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:10:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c14f97ee-ab62-4eed-906d-7af8602c8651","accessControl_ssim":["b3984bfa-1e64-4827-a6a3-200569bcf017"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a strategy for reducing membership loss in Baptist churches in Uganda"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:41:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:41:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f2f130a7-bbe3-49bc-8dad-ef21a93cc570"],"hasLease_ssim":["7883019c-9573-492c-943e-e82e9ccbd05c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Justice Anderson"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Vernon W Sivage"],"publisher_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Baptist Union of Uganda","Church membership","Church attendance"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is designed to determine ways to increase membership retention in churches affiliated with the Baptist Union of Uganda. A questionnaire that assesses the discipleship profile of individual church members will be used to determine the causes for membership dropout. Based on the findings of the survey, a pilot discipleship program will be designed and introduced to churches in the Baptist Union that focuses on specific techniques to improve membership assimilation and retention. Eight churches representative of those found in the Baptist Union will be selected by the project coordinator working with a committee selected by the leadership of the Baptist Union of Uganda. From these churches, members will be randomly chosen to participate in the questionnaire. Data from the questionnaires will be collected, tabulated, and analyzed to ascertain the characteristics of each church according to the following criteria: attitudes, conduct/behavior, relationships to God and people, ministry involvement, and beliefs. Based on this information, changes can be made to strengthen existing discipleship programs and new discipleship programs can be implemented that target specific needs."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132864806387712,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:10:10.437Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:41:28Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:34:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ec07cd0e-754d-4e21-8a26-aa3223a4137e","accessControl_ssim":["125a16ed-f833-496a-bad4-b6449911eb08"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Nurturing a spirituality of chutzpah on a church-related college campus"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:41:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:52:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cac45885-c112-4b74-ad62-90bfb0b13bc6"],"hasLease_ssim":["19367481-710d-48f2-8be1-1573c33d5617"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Denise Dombkowski Hopkins"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Often, these churches are left floundering without any clear sense of direction while they are going through their pastoral transition. When this occurs the church is often thrown into a state of almost total disarray, confusion, and chaos. During these periods the church suffers greatly. Unfortunately it often takes a long time for the church to recover from the setbacks which may have transpired during the pastoral transition period. Presently, there is no homogeneous process used throughout the organization for filling pastoral vacancies. While the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World has a written policy and procedure for filling such vacancies, this policy is not always accepted as the preferred or even viable method. When the written policy and procedure is used the church sometimes ends up a divided house and in litigation. In my thesis, I have gathered and analyzed data and information regarding pastoral transitions in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. I have subsequently developed a pastoral leadership manual in which I set forth several models for filling pastoral vacancies. It is hoped that the use of such models by membership churches can help alleviate the problem described above. It is anticipated that the analysis and the resultant manual may be useful for helping churches and clergy to be prepared for and constructively deal with pastoral transition."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["795851c5-e081-4353-9c00-2c554dd1d015"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134917423267840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:42:47.965Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":442,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
