Recognizing the importance of the scriptures in shaping the community of faith, questions are raised around issues of selection, arrangement, parameters of lections and the relationship between lections. In addition, the issue of what biblical material is not included in the lectionary becomes important. The content of the non-lectionary biblical material is identified and summarized chapter by chapter. Thematic and hermeneutic issues are examined. This can be accomplished by a few individuals, utilizing gifts and graces found within the congregation. The needs and wants are ascertained through questionnaires, surveys, and focus groups. This study concluded that this does work when there is congregational support; however, without congregational support this will not work. One obstacle was found with those individuals who use the focus groups as a means of venting their anger and frustration. This study describes the response of an African American Baptist congregation when given an opportunity to compare and contrast the preaching of the new and postmodern homiletic which is inductive, narrative, and non-authoritarian, to the preaching tradition of the African American church, which is largely deductive and authoritarian.  The most important conclusion reached in this study is that the major determinant in sermonic satisfaction was not an issue of form. Making use of a spirituality assessment tool developed from a contextual practical theology, the project measures the effects of praxis ministry on spiritual disposition (including perceptions of God, faith, and mission).  The research indicates that the method is effective in accomplishing this goal. It seeks to identify the form and content of preaching which are most effective for each generation and the nature of preaching which transcends generational differences.  The principle that generational cohorts have a personality is the foundation for differentiating between generations and identifying a preaching style for each generation.  The thesis project shows that the generational model can be used to form sermons that address particular generations as well as build understanding between the generations. The author is interested to test whether a womanist model of care--the core beliefs of African American women found in traditional African religions, the oral tradition, relevant biblical affirmations, and ethic of eighteenth century clubwomen, as well as African American folk culture, can counteract 'at-risk' behaviors of children and youth by building psychic survival and self-esteem and inspiring a higher sense of hope and expectancy. Four testing instruments were used. Test results and behavioral observation indicate that each person tested in the study improved his/her sense of self-esteem, with the percentage of improvement ranging from three to fifteen percent. The mutual critical dialogue among the three sources resulted in recommendations for a renewed ministry to parishioners in behalf of spirituality. Two basic themes out of which the recommendations were generated were: 1) the image of the Church as a community of disciples, and 2) small faith communities. How can a church press toward a mark if they are not looking in a forward direction?  How can they press toward a mark if the mark is not identified?  These concerns are compounded when a high percentage of the membership will be gone every two or three years.  Imagine how difficult it is to make long-range plans in a short-term community.  The goal of this project is to create a process whereby church members can envision and perform long-range ministry goals.  The Shell Point Baptist Church in Beaufort, South Carolina, is in a military town.  Surrounding the church are the Parris Island Recruit Depot, the Marine Corps Air Station, and the Naval Hospital. Military personnel are temporary and are constantly transferring or deploying for lengthy time.  This professional project is an attempt to make strategic long-range plans even though many of the church members are short-term residents.
