This model has survived in the church long after its demise in western culture. A new model, 'servant leadership,' is more appropriate in the church at the turn of the twenty-first century. From servant leadership a model of servant preaching can be developed. Servant preaching reflects a contemporary homiletic that emphasizes partnership between preacher and congregation, and fosters a relationship of trust in which a preacher's leadership is established. The model of partnership between preacher and people is built on the author's experience with the Parish Project Group, in dialogue with the work of four homileticians."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127857274028032,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:50:34.881Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:33:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"78b733c7-8c31-4d3c-bf2a-673f630e07f1","accessControl_ssim":["7977411b-d428-4d21-9a17-bcdae9274f91"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Beating the odds: successfully following a long-term pastor"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:40:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["467c91bf-4a99-4d4e-bf26-b51820563ecd"],"hasLease_ssim":["911c3679-77fb-47db-b99c-cc2e2dd0e871"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stephen A Seamands"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard A Danielson"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Interpersonal relations","Clergy","Laity","Clergy--Tenure","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to identify the factors considered dominanct in successful and unsuccessful pastoral transitions by pastors who have followed a long-term predecessor. This study sought to gather information on successful and unsuccessful transitions by focusing on three participants in each transition: the predecessor, the successor, and the congregation. Twenty pastors from the Western New York Conference of the United Methodist Church were chosen to be interviewed based on meeting the following criteria: 1) full-time pastors appointed at some point in their vocation to succeed a pastor who had served the congregation for nine years or more; 2) for those currently serving in that position, a minimum tenure of two years was required; and 3) for those not currently serving in that position, the term of service needed to have ended within the past five years. Data analysis was based on the transcripts of those interviews. In regard to the three participants in pastoral transitions the major findings included: 1) the choices the predecessor made in relating to the congregation and supporting the new pastor were more important than whether he or she remained in the church and community; 2) a healthy process of grieving and letting go of the predecessor was critical if the congregation was to welcome and follow the new pastor; 3) the incoming pastor's ability to understand the congregation and exert appropriate leadership was essential in each transition. The increasing length of pastorates in the United Methodist Church requires attention to the dynamics of succession following long-term pastorates. This study concludes that more transitions can be successful with the provision of appropriate training that focuses on practical matters and issues of character."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134344002142208,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:33:41.108Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:39:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e0625367-7996-497b-a000-f7122305d190","accessControl_ssim":["75b2e721-8b0a-481e-8fde-3ab3ea8d736f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching for a whole-person response in developing a healthy church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:33:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["723c8168-279b-4628-a984-f145abc58f9d"],"hasLease_ssim":["fbee98b9-a2e2-4862-9ba7-8e15b96bf0ac"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anthony Headley"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John M Crowe"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In contrast to some, this study sought to present a thoroughly consistent and genuine integration of ecclesiology and systems theory in addressing the subject of church health. The research attempted to seek out the utilization of certain formative spiritual disciplines which have been historically used by men and women of the church. This research also sought to identify what other, if any, spiritual disciplines and/or habits are being used today as a methodology for spiritual formation. The study sought also, to evaluate those findings in light of the biblical call to renewal and the use and practice of those disciplines, in varying degrees, by John Wesley, a significant theological mentor of the men and women serving in ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. The study was guided by three research questions: 1) What are the methods of personal spiritual renewal being utilized today by itinerant evangelists in the Church of the Nazarene? 2) Are these factors which influence the methods that are being used? 3) In what ways are current formative practices among itinerant ministers in the Church of the Nazarene, USA, congruent or incongruent with a biblical view of personal spiritual renewal among ministers and with the historical Christian tradition? The research considered several variables to ascertain their influence on the current practices of spiritual formation among itinerant evangelists. Those variables were tenure, age, gender, itinerant evangelism as means of support, number of revival meetings held annually, certification, spouse or teammate accompanied travel, educational training. The findings of this study revealed a strong commitment to the principles of the spiritual disciplines."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134613541748736,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:37:58.161Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:40:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"eece8786-46b2-4a38-844f-b0abc8d884cb","accessControl_ssim":["960d9ea3-837c-4f3f-ada3-001bdd7d3cf7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching to Generation X: the embodiment of postmodernism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:57:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cf7c4d63-1c7b-486d-be91-414d38d83ce6"],"hasLease_ssim":["f99d4e29-c56d-4867-8943-4b6a6686a727"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Leslie A Andrews"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Matthew C Boda"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Expository preaching","Generation X"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In this study, I have attempted to develop a means by which I could research and evaluate the means by which those who preached to Generation X audiences were effectively communicating. The hypothesis was that biblical preaching which connects with Generation X could be identified by means of two elements. First, it is identified by the ways in which it seeks to address the distinguishing characteristics of Generation X people. Second, it can be identified by specific qualities inherent in the act of preaching to Generation X people. The research project involved listening to and evaluating thirty sermons preached by Generation X practitioners. Three sermons were solicited from each of ten practitioners chosen for study. Each was evaluated for their method of preaching. Specific evaluation categories wer related to sermon content, sermon delivery, and the degree to which the sermon was modeled after the teaching style of Jesus. Two specific sermon evaluation tools were designed and used in the course of this study. Each evaluates the sermon in eleven evaluation categories using the Likert scale method and provides the opportunity for the collection of anecdotal evidence as well. This study led to the development of a specific model to be used in preaching to postmodern people. This model is make up of four critical qualities of preaching. The first quality of this model is preaching that is Scripture-steeped; postmodern preaching must develop the means to help people experience the Scriptures. Second, postmodern preaching must be relationally engaging; it must draw people toward the process of journeying and growing in community together. Third, it must be highly relevant; our preaching must relate to the individual life of the hearer as well as the wider cultural context. The practical means of developing the partnership was the development of an assessment tool for the ministry centers. Once the tool was developed, it was field tested in seven Baptist ministry centers. The testing was also done in partnership as the various partners came together at the centers for an on-site visit and assessment.
