The power of drama to communicate values, truths, and beliefs has a long history in the secular milieu. Although the biblical tradition is not a dramatic tradition, its narrative is flexible enough to become a dramatic presentation. This study traces the role of drama in the Roman Catholic tradition of faith and its use as a viable tool for individuals to experience healing and reconciliation as they tell their story in the context of sacred scripture. Research has revealed that while many individuals may seek pastoral counseling, such intervention may not always lead them to a place of acceptance in the community of faith. These individuals may take solace in hearing the Word of God and allow that Word to draw them into the compassionate presence of a loving God. Empirical data from pastoral counseling experience, biblical and theological insights, use of active contemplation methods, social and theological issues take on new meaning when one experiences exclusion from 'the rooms' of the Christian community. The power of a dramatic play can be used to build a bridge between the individual and the Christian community. The reflections of the participants are revealed in the power of this medium, which brings healing and reconciliation to individuals and communities. This work recognizes drama as a credible tool to communicate truth, to address issues that are often ignored, and to engage a community in a dynamic way. Drama has power where words fail. It causes something to happen within both the community and the dramatist."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130051490611201,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:25:27.450Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f06872a6-af7f-4c88-ab81-6d26424e4087","accessControl_ssim":["62f8ea4b-d260-451f-a249-4d13af3a4771"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Prayers, presence, gifts, and service: the development of active membership in a United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:59:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["35d56fce-2f97-4f40-bd82-097297799706"],"hasLease_ssim":["6786f45b-b527-48dd-8d18-ef332a5a2fac"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Zachary W Eswine"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["L Joseph Scheets"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["First United Methodist Church (Collinsville, Ill)","Small groups","Church work","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to discover factors that contributed to the development of active church membership in The First United Methodist Church of Collinsville, Illinois. The church has a fabulous modern physical plant, a large endowment, and some talented members, all of which were not used as effectively as I believed they could be because of various long-held attitudes relating to racism, secrecy, inclusivity, trust, power, community, and stewardship. Our theological mandate is to be good stewards of all we have been given, for it all comes from God. I came to believe that stewardship was the foundational issue through which I could address other issues. Our relationship to our stewardship reflects our relationship with God. I used Sawin's Family Cluster model to work with a diverse inter-generational group of members, studying various aspects of stewardship with the goal of helping them to change their attitudes toward the resources they have and their use of those resources. Though I think the family cluster did make people stop and think about stewardship issues, I'm not convinced that they will make any substantive changes in the way they handle the building, the endowment, or the new people who happen their way. Through the use of spiritual exercises and social analysis, congregational leaders find the energy that will enable them to identify needs, plan and carry out a social ministry project in Palo Seco, Puerto Rico."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128908864684032,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:07:17.757Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ece86368-504e-4ab9-bae1-66b52c712ec5","accessControl_ssim":["87a9075b-031a-47b1-8fa8-f075e27a8eca"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Presbyterian worship and the Mexican context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:54:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7dd380ed-dfe7-4113-ab57-8aaf60e78a80"],"hasLease_ssim":["ce74b244-3548-40f1-8495-6ad1ab3d68f8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Nelson Jennings"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"location_tesim":["Mexico"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jonathan P Seda"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Iglesia Nacional Presbiteriana de México","Presbyterian Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study explores how Mexican church leaders attending the worship seminars presented by the author are applying what they learned within their cultural context. This is a speech act spoken by Jesus in order to effect healing in the story. My beginning thesis was that when the preacher's exegetical, interpretive and homiletic methods are informed by a combination of speech act theory, principles of oral storytelling and issues of social stress, the congregation can experience a kind of healing at identifiable moments in the sermon. One significant finding for the moment of holy utterance in the sermon is that repeating the holy utterance at different moments of the direct address to the congregation, etc. creates proper space to allow for the congregation to experience holy utterance. My more significant discovery is that holy utterance as proclamation that heals is a paradigm for all preaching. This is important to the field of homiletics for three reasons. First, this thesis presents an exploration of preaching that is more consistent with our post-modern world. Second, it seeks to bring together some of recent homiletical thought into a homiletical art form. Third, the people for whom we preach week in and week out need healing of the stress they experience in their everyday lives."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128473309282304,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:00:22.379Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":429,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
