As chaplains develop pastoral relationships with their 'congregants' with Alzheimer's disease, they need an understanding of how they can provide spiritual and pastoral care to those who have lost not only their capacity to remember but are also losing their precious memories. This project assumes that the mission of the church is to witness God's love to people in ways that are appropriate to their stage and condition of life.  The research for this study uses the grounded theory method of research.  Sixty students on campuses near Charlotte, North Carolina were interviewed.  Conclusions from the research include specific suggestions for people who minister to students during the college years. The author also tested the thesis that sermons explicitly utilizing covenant themes would be better understood and retained and more easily applied than sermons using other images. Questionnaires, both initial and follow-up, tested this thesis within the local parish context. The results indicated that the topic doesn't get dealt with enough in many congregations, that parishioners are generally unhappy with the church's handling of the matter and that when the church does deal with it, it is greatly appreciated in the pews. Others are previously unchurched or 'General Protestant' and thus do not have a Presbyterian/Reformed understanding of the Biblical story (Biblical awareness).  Many had limited time to devote to learning, and the adult education offerings were limited in scope.  In this time of declining Biblical awareness, the goal was to help individuals learn that they are connected to the Biblical witness and need to see their lives as Christians committed to the community of faith with other faithful people.  To help them, this project used education, learning, and dialogue as the basic strategies, but other approaches ('strategic planning' and 're-framing') were utilized. The interventions were to have laity in the congregation design an overall program of Biblical awareness, help persons become grounded in the Biblical faith and see themselves as connected to that faith.  The approaches were initiated with classes, home-studies, creative experiences, and worship opportunities.  It was the aim of these interventions to help move individuals and the congregation to greater depth as Christians. The institute was aimed at developing leadership potential and was designed to introduce participants to thirteen core competency areas considered important for successful church leadership.  Each program component, activity, and course was designed to strengthen the participants knowledge in one or more of these competency areas. As a result of buying into a cultural norm of individualism, Riverside has little understanding of the communal nature of the Church.  The Enlightenment model of change no longer works.  Education as merely transmitting information does not shape hearts or transform behavior.  The way to change the theological understanding of the congregation is not by teaching a class, but rather, by changing the practices of the congregation.  Communal practices shape belief. We enter the church through baptism. Using surveys, the author assessed the surrounding community's felt needs and researched the congregation's self-image using theological and sociological typologies.
