It examines the call to ministry and its importance in carrying out the office of pastor. It considers problem areas and obstacles in the life of a pastor that can cause him to be discouraged, disillusioned or to succumb to moral or financial failure. The study consists of interviews with pastors, wives of pastors, district superintendents, denominational presidents and other ministry leaders. Additionally, the work draws from a host of written material on the various reasons why pastors leave ministry. As a result of the study and interviews, it is concluded that most pastors have a number of perils that they must avoid whenever possible if they truly wish to remain in ministry and be effective therein. The best guideline to follow seems to be the instruction given to Timothy by the Apostle Paul -- '...keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist and discharge all the duties of your office' (2. Tim. 4:5)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130098021171200,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:11.825Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:14:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:59:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6a654898-ba56-4625-8782-882490b2ff4d","accessControl_ssim":["04321f81-c850-4e0b-9044-a3b268808f30"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Introducing adults to theology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:14:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:15:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["085695da-b1bc-42fd-8e00-4b8a53ffa5e8"],"hasLease_ssim":["0bc46149-90f1-4d31-a9bc-8e35a52aa4b0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David A Roozen"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joseph M Callahan"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Adult education","Theology--Study","Religious education--Teaching methods"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project introduces adults to theology through six one hour classes. The Church should search for the same position that Jesus embraced -- live in the tension of being in the world, but not of the world. What would a worship model, maintaining this tension, look like? This thesis begins by exploring the fundamental teachings that are forever necessary to Christian worship. The Church's worship must remain thoroughly biblical with Jesus being the center, no matter what cultural setting. This must form the content of worship. Postmodernism contains some values that are in direct conflict with Christianity, and the Church must never compromise on its beliefs. Other postmodern values, such as the desire for community and the search for spiritual meaning provide the Church a great opportunity to express authentic Christianity and influence many. The cultural values help shape the style and the relevance of worship. This thesis examines four worship services from churches that are attempting to incarnate Christianity in a postmoden setting."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130392693047297,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:30:52.846Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:14:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:10:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f34e4f31-96e5-485e-92c5-fba8b1a662fe","accessControl_ssim":["458dfe49-2b4c-45a1-82e9-0578e58e7a72"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Feminism through the back door: a method for teaching feminist theology without calling it by that name"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:13:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:04:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a28749aa-a035-4d9d-9a95-016d2f6223b5"],"hasLease_ssim":["1dae64de-bae6-492a-a1c1-9aa8e2be43df"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Elizabeth Nordquist"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paula Fae Trimble-Familetti"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious attitudes","Feminist theology"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian education--Teaching methods"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this author is that feminist theology can be taught if the word feminist is not used. The relationship of the neighborhood and church is grounded in a neighborhood plan."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132902261522432,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:10:46.157Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:13:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:22:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0d500d4b-e35a-49d5-bd5d-2953d82a7945","accessControl_ssim":["cb72d0f8-6438-4c22-a280-3018400e7836"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The importance of building a faith-based initiative in a poor oppressed urban neighborhood in Brockton, Massachusetts"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:13:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:29:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1ab579ae-66aa-45a8-8647-50cc60575f4c"],"hasLease_ssim":["b77dfc9b-1495-4d14-917f-4626d99f8cdf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alvin Padilla"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bertha E Pittman"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with the poor"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work will focus on the positive impact of a multi-cultural family community center's faith-based initiative on the lives of children, youth and their families in the economically depressed poor urban neighborhood of Brockton, MA. It is concerned with questions regarding the biblical nature of calling, its historical application, and its current impact upon church planters. The thesis focuses, thought not exclusively, upon church planters within the Southern Baptist Convention, of which the author is a part. This convention plants between fifteen hundred and two thousand churches in North American every year. The thesis begins with a presentation of the problem: that the Southern Baptist Convention has moved away from evaluating church planting candidates for ministry primarily based upon their call and their character. These qualities have been replaced with a premium upon competence. The author then looks at the call biblically, theologically, and historically to see how others have responded to this concern in other settings. The work then presents the project description, in which the author developed a questionnaire, a conference, and a series of interviews with church planters to assess their opinion about this need in their own lives. It closes with a chapter on conclusions based upon the project and implications for further studies that still need to be done. A question the thesis poses is whether these mileposts differ between church planters and all others who are called into ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129749470314496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:20:39.421Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:12:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:25:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"17de53da-f1a7-432c-8d17-8ee3803011cd","accessControl_ssim":["8e010a1b-1951-4989-88ce-56309fb06997"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Physician heal thyself: overcoming denial as a barrier to effective intervention by churches in community substance abuse ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:12:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:49:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d761cd40-4a8f-4550-8d8a-00e3c8b279f6"],"hasLease_ssim":["1fda9495-884b-493f-8ed8-686608bdb7b3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Steven W Klipowicz"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Louis Peirre Moore"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American churches","Church work with addicts","Substance abuse"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project focused on the issue of systemic denial and its impact on the African American church and community on substance abuse.
