John Wesley was a source of support and dialogue with the women whose work as lay preachers helped his religious movement successfully spread throughout Europe. The reasons for this are threefold. The first is that the local church in most communities did not have people with retardation among their congregations because most were institutionalized. The second reason is because with de-institutionalization came the need for adequate housing and day programming and people never looked at the spiritual or faith based needs of this group of people. The last reason is because we, as the Church, have chosen not to educate ourselves on how best to become more welcoming. By doing this we have maintained an 'at homeness' with our brand of Christianity. The method of research was participatory action through the use of story telling as modeled from the biblical literature. Also used were survey and needs assessments done with people who have developmental disabilities with in a geographical location in central Maine. The results of the participatory action research were that the Church in this local has not met the needs of this small community. The vast majority of people who told their stories or participated in the surveys and needs assessments have had terrible experiences with the Church and so called Christians. Of course, there are stories of hope and strength stemming from relationships developed through fellowship and prayer life. Education needs to happen within the local church. This education should come from those who live with disabilities on a daily basis. As a result of this work, an Advisory Committee has been set up to begin to speak to small groups within some local churches in an effort to bring about a better understanding of what needs to happen to try and bring all of God's people into the Body of Christ. The project report includes resources to local and national groups already doing this work. It also contains resources related directly to people with retardation and the Church. There is also an example of one of the workshops given to members of the area churches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Beeson Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["15a18942-6151-49a8-8979-cd138c6b47cc"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127489404207104,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:44:44.053Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:40:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:47:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1adba027-d356-4006-882e-c91491f67137","accessControl_ssim":["08f9897f-0275-4bbe-958f-7d403f6da79b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Practicing the faith amidst competing narratives of the Old Testament wilderness and consumerism in the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:40:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:55:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a11927ae-e959-4632-8a4d-b1c8da47524d"],"hasLease_ssim":["9701f3bb-07ab-4980-b31b-263e8988e0bf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Walter Brueggemann"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["C Gregory DeLoach"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Consumption (Economics)","Wilderness (Theology)--Biblical teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is a qualitative study of competing narratives between scripture and congregation. Specific practices of faith are provided as 'counter-text' and a means to equip the congregation to disobey the ideology of consumerism in light of the biblical claims."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127648180633600,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:47:15.475Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:40:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:54:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"446f7c0d-a423-4f7f-8b7b-0fbe0f8a3ec5","accessControl_ssim":["2fd1cdd2-023b-40cf-834e-316834a7952e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Contextual worship in the North American mainline church: 'wising up' or 'dumbing down'?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:40:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:07:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0d34e5b0-d06c-4ce2-b5bf-eb4977caa5a9"],"hasLease_ssim":["d5eb9bc0-79cb-484c-a3cb-227b78aa1a4a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Darrell L Guder"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy D Roberts"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Liturgical adaptation","Public worship","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Liturgics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project demonstrates how and why contextualizing worship in the North American mainline church is a missional imperative.
