The author studies spiritual development, using the theories of Kegan, Erikson, Fowler, Gilligan, and Loder. The history and theology of the catechism that helped shape the identity of the German Reformed people was researched. The author developed a pedagogy, based on Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, for teaching the catechism in the 21st century. A case study was developed based on a six week study of two churches in the United Church of Christ. The author made the following conclusions: 1) Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, as pedagogy, offers different approaches to adults in various stages of their spiritual development. 2) Adults do not have an adequate concept of sin; as a result they are confused about how grace is operative in their lives; therefore, they do not know what it means to live a life of gratitude. 3) Without a strong identity, based on core documents of the faith, there is no congregational loyalty. To address this question the author used the pro-active research method, meeting with the three age groups weekly for twelve weeks. The author assumed that lectio, practiced in a small group, would not only deepen one's relationship with God, but would invite faith sharing from one's life story. Research of membership records over twenty years and interviews with members of the congregation provided the data.  In addition, the author researched diversity and leadership literature. The premise is that empathy, as presented by the psychoanalytic school of self-psychology is a caring and compassionate way for a pastor to be in relationship with his or her ministry setting and models the essence of the gospel message. The author attempts to answer this question through a case study of his congregation, which offers a perfect example of a small rural church that suddenly finds itself surrounded by unprecedented growth and needing to make decisions that call for major changes. The metaphor 'church yard' represents the entire area of a local church's life.
