For the purposes of this paper, the use of multimedia is defined as: the use of projected images and video of popular films.  The conviction of this thesis - that multimedia can have an overall positive effect on the preacher as well as the listeners of a sermon - is based on personal preaching experience, class work and reflection during a three year preaching project.  The thesis explores and reflects on field experience as well as dialogue with several writers, including Richard Jensen and Thomas Troeger.  The thesis builds on the work of Paul Tillich who identifies the human condition in terms of estrangement.  This thesis suggests that use of multimedia can only illuminate the human condition, not provide the cure. However, due to changes in culture, multimedia may uniquely serve as a more effective tool for communicating the Gospel message, which indeed is the answer to estrangement.  Included in the thesis are summary multimedia rules, which are the result of my preaching experience and study. The author preached such sermons, offered the experience of affirming one's baptism as part of the sermon, and recorded the congregation's involvement in inviting others to worship.  He suggests that the addition of responding physically to the sermon helped encourage outreach through the congregation.  The implications of this work are that this opportunity may allow congregations to reach out to the unchurched with new passion. This paper explores the topic of change, in light of the many changes occurring today in the Roman Catholic Church. Drawing upon scripture, church history, contemporary secular change management literature, spirituality (especially spirituality employed in the past during times of change), and certain theologies, this paper charts one spiritual path people can follow during times of change in the church.    It begins with an exploration of the process of change in general. What are the reasons people resist change, especially changes in the church?  What are some of the emotions we can expect to feel as we are going through change?  Do these emotions hold up to the light of scrutiny?  Sometimes when we examine our feeling in light of reality we find that the feelings are baseless or have a basis in something other than the immediate change to which we are trying to adapt.    Change within a religious context is explored, and some theological approaches to change are considered.  Finally, the author describes a unique spiritual approach to change which has been successfully offered as reflection sessions during the years 2001-2003 in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, NY.  These reflections are entitled 'The LEAP of Faith,' with LEAP being an acronym representing four essential components of this particular approach: Learning, Experience, Action, and Prayer. Participants in these reflection sessions have included professional Diocesan and parish staffs, volunteers, clergy, professed religious and parishioners. Saarinen and its author's subsequent suggestion for revitalization. In so doing, she hopes to discover 1) the congregation's kairos moments, 2) implications for present and future ministries, and 3) how her ministerial gifts can best be used. The project necessarily explored the difference between 'chronos' history and 'kairos' history and the definition of 'testimony' and 'witness' in terms of Post-modern Christianity and 'exile' images. The congregation was interviewed and surveyed in both group and individual settings over a period of 2 1/2 years by both an interim pastor and the new pastor. The subjective data gathered was explored along with recurring themes from the pastor's journal. Employing key concepts of liberation theology introduced by Gustavo Gutierrez, as well as the theological reflections of Walter Brueggemann, Jurgen Moltmann and several Christian feminist theologians, the author argues that 'the unborn represent an oppressed class in need of relief.'  The rights of the unborn should be framed within the larger discussion of liberation theology, rather than being limited to medical, biological, or social concerns that fail to account for the biblical and theological affirmations of human life. This was considered a fruitful window through which to examine the state of the peace position today.  A questionnaire was sent to 228 Brethren pastors.  One hundred seventeen responded.  The findings revealed that most congregations are not experiencing significant conflict over the position, but a majority of pastors are uncomfortable with the current status quo.
