This study seeks a documented and experiential framework by reviewing a candidacy and call approval process in a local presbytery to determine whether and how the church should engage with parachurch ministry. The purpose of this project is to explore the core needs of 'Generation X' and practical ways the Christian Church might address those needs. The research on this project is conducted through interviews with 'Generation X' members of Second Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga, TN, and 'Gen X' individuals who are not members of any particular church. Pastors of churches that are prospering in ministry to 'Generation X' were also interviewed. This single-group, pretest-posttest design analyzed quantitative and qualitative data. Participants (n=11) did show a significant gain in knowledge of ways to practice the Lord's presence.  While almost 75% of the participants provided qualitative data indicating a gain in intimacy, participants did not demonstrate significant gains in intimacy on the quantitative questions. This project proposes that by keeping the Sabbath, by accepting the fourth commandment as a gift from God, people's reality shifts. People learn that they are defined as a child of God and that they are not in control. This becomes a gift. The model weds biblical priorities and spiritual formation tools to the process of self-directed learning (Richard Boyatzis). Both pastors and experts in counseling and ministerial training evaluated the model.
