The English mystery cycles are seen, first as a predecessor to Shakespeare and second as a source of information about medieval culture. This author's process began with a review of this research by theater historians in the 1960s and 70s, then moved to analysis by medieval scholars of the last twenty years who are searching the mystery plays for archaeological evidence of custom and social change. This research reveals the medieval dramatist's transformation of the stories of scripture by setting the gospel narratives in medieval life. It identifies techniques including contemporary costumes, dialogue that deals with the actors' concerns and questions, and biblical characters transformed into contemporary figures. The lay Christians 'locally incarnated' the Bible by bringing human flesh to biblical story and taking their own place in salvation history. The identification of these plays as ludus (a Latin term related to the games of the arena) encouraged the establishment of a new 'field of play.' This project adapts the techniques of the medieval mystery plays to communicate the good news in the 21st century through contemporary mystery plays. The second stage of the research was to create 'fields of play' in the 21st century and encourage youth and adults to 'locally incarnate' the biblical story in their own lives. A reader's theater group was introduced to the techniques of the mystery plays, enjoyed discussing doctrine, and wrote their own mystery play. A congregation enlivened their worship, discovered drama gifts among their members, and grew in their appreciation of scripture and how it could speak to their lives. A youth arts camp had fun exploring scripture, a first for many of them, and improvised dialogue that dealt with their own issues and questions. This author concludes that using tableaux and improvised dialogue to explore biblical story encourages today's Christians to view their own lives through the lens of scripture. Playing in drama through these plays leads people into deeper exploration of what they believe about their own faith. Finally, performing mystery plays in worship invited congregations to adopt the biblical narratives as their own story."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133479299186688,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:19:56.463Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:23:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:29:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3b78ae1b-8163-4fca-b59b-58df64abd106","accessControl_ssim":["3a363b62-e62b-4b02-9a53-5a36eb27e13d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Development of a servant leadership training process for elected board chairpersons"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:23:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:51:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4acc1f93-fdf3-4e76-a8fa-e50e52785abe"],"hasLease_ssim":["aa2649e9-013b-45d6-ba46-ad3ea81e086f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, MO)"],"advisor_tesim":["David J Peter"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Larry W Tieman"],"publisher_tesim":["Concordia Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Church committees","Servant leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Lay Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is an exercise in training board chairpersons to become servant leaders who will bring people and programs together for the completion of identified tasks within the life of the congregation. As reminiscing is a common characteristic among the aged, applying it in the preaching ministry and worship activity among nursing home residents can serve the purpose of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in many helpful ways. This MAP explains and presents examples of how reminiscing from the past in the lives of the residents draws forth vivid memories in their minds. Used as a method in preaching, these memories can also strengthen and deepen the faith of the aged individual who is nearing eternity. Six sermons modeling this preaching method were written and delivered to the residents of the Greenfield Manor in Greenfield, Iowa, between May and October in 2005. Interviews with several residents of the Greenfield Manor and detailed reviews of the sermons are included in this document."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, MO)"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c233458a-014a-46a2-aa34-c5309c85f7e6"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126653860052992,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:31:27.217Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:23:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:08:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cbe2f9a0-997c-47ee-a534-62bf9e51e072","accessControl_ssim":["bf545763-ae04-4a24-9000-8847dfaa93b7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The effectiveness of illustrations in preaching: understanding and retaining biblical truths"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:23:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:59:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f89d786e-f2ab-4a7f-99c1-0ab154a1aad6"],"hasLease_ssim":["39bb53ea-8a75-4f8c-96c1-847c248577ba"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, MO)"],"advisor_tesim":["Dale A Meyer"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ronald D Rall"],"keyword_tesim":["Sermons--Illustrations"],"publisher_tesim":["Concordia Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Sermons","Lutheran preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explored how illustrations function in sermons to facilitate the understanding and retention of biblical truths. It is believed that in many worship settings there is a 'disconnect' between the lectionary read and the selected sermon text. By the time the preacher begins his sermon the hearer has often forgotten the scripture reading. The use of biblical storytelling can assist the listener in hearing, understanding, remembering and connecting the text of scripture with the sermon. To evaluate the effective use of biblical storytelling, surveys were conducted on four Sundays among a sample of congregation members. On each Sunday the lectionary reading was 'read' in one service and 'told' in the other. Participants completed a survey following each of the worship services noting the impact the scripture had on their hearing, understanding, remembering and connecting that scripture with the sermon. The results supported the theory that when the sermon text is presented as a storytelling rather than a reading there is a stronger remembrance and connection with the sermon. After hearing the sermon text 'told,' rather than read, the hearer is more aware of and familiar with the scripture which benefits the reception of the sermon. While the preacher may not wish to use biblical storytelling every week, it can have an effect on the hearer's ability to connect text and sermon."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, MO)"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c233458a-014a-46a2-aa34-c5309c85f7e6"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126810323320832,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:33:56.432Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":372,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
