The Scriptures remain a mystery to many people. They complain: The Bible is too hard to read; It is too long; It contains words I don't understand; I don't know the characters; It doesn't relate to my life; It is boring! These reactions make me think of reading Shakespeare and trying to understand it. The language of Shakespeare can be a barrier. The plot can be confusing. The length is daunting. The characters have peculiar names and get mixed up in our minds. Then we go to the theater and see it performed. It comes to life. It is exciting. It moves us. The words are embodied in the characters and we can see them move, speak, and interact with one another. We can follow the plot, see the action, and understand the story. It makes more sense. I want to know if preaching in first person can do the same for the Scriptures as the theater does for the play. Can it lift the biblical text off the printed page and make it come alive? Can it engage the congregation and make Scripture more accessible? I have explored preaching in first person. In this style of preaching, the preacher assumes the persona of one of the characters in the biblical text and delivers a sermon from the perspective of that biblical character. With a bit of costuming and a prop or two, the preacher embodies the biblical character in a play. I propose that this is incarnate preaching; that is, preaching that embodies the word and presents it in human form. They say that 'variety is the spice of life' and perhaps in the homiletic world preaching in first person is the 'spice' of sermon delivery. It can add variety to the normal fare of preaching. I experimented with this preaching style, as there is very little written on the subject in the field of homiletics, and I preached each of the assigned eight sermons in first person. I learned that the biblical text came alive for the congregation and actively engaged them through preaching in first person."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127837139271680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:50:15.680Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:35:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:31:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6e81519a-3ecf-4b3d-8914-204a7f5e71a7","accessControl_ssim":["d43c80e4-3312-42be-9c4c-337e66287881"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An evaluation of the understanding of the gospel in CBA churches of Washington state"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:35:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:22:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["78a53fb7-94ad-4695-8da4-2e31a6c0fd07"],"hasLease_ssim":["332e4ef6-0f6d-4ccd-80ae-1dde407a3d0a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John W Reed"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"location_tesim":["Washington (State)"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Scott E Moffat"],"keyword_tesim":["Christian gospel","Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Christian gospel","Conservative Baptist Association of America"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Evaluation of the understanding of the gospel in Conservative Baptist Association churches of Washington state"],"abstract_tesim":["The objective of this research project is to do a statistic analysis of the understanding of the gospel in the Conservative Baptist Association (CBA) churches of Washington State with application as to how to better communicate the gospel to its congregants. The purpose of the research project is embedded in the question, 'what is the gospel and how is it understood by people in the pews?' In order to test the hypothesis and answer the question, this researcher did the following: developed two separate survey questionnaires, one survey for the pastors of Washington State CBA churches and one survey for the congregants of Washington State CBA churches. The two surveys were then evaluated for areas of agreement and disagreement. The curriculum was developed based on the words of Jesus, 'Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men' (Mk. 1:17 NAS). The selected believers participated in the developed six-week discipleship study that contained two weeks on following Jesus, two weeks on Jesus' conforming the believer and two weeks on the Christian's responsibility in soul winning. The study included group meetings followed by daily, individual lessons, Monday through Friday. The participants were evaluated before, during, and after the study. The primary goals of the project were to research the biblical basis for the personal responsibility of sharing Christ, to develop a discipleship curriculum that addressed that responsibility and its practice, and to equip the believers to become followers of Jesus and fish for men."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5e492469-490e-44a3-90c1-17560a603bc2"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721100759793664,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:16:30.489Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:34:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:54:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"60801aef-4fcd-499d-939b-60a4fd83c633","accessControl_ssim":["504bc075-e509-412c-ae7b-fe3061a77af6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'This lone brightness': Frances Hubbard Flaherty and the true dharma eye"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:34:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:57:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b603307d-ba00-4933-82a0-285a0f217983"],"hasLease_ssim":["b35ac34f-6ab0-4174-b519-264f3ac5ac68"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Jack Coogan"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael S Bever"],"keyword_tesim":["Films--Religious aspects"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Flaherty, Frances Hubbard","Zen Buddhism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The collective films of Robert and Frances Flaherty present a vision which has not been explicitly claimed by any religious tradition.
