Benedictine values of stability, obedience and conversion are interpreted for a church community. The context is a small suburban Episcopal church beginning a new ministry with their recently arrived priest. In various group feedback sessions, listeners expressed their understanding of how Benedictine values can shape the spiritual life of the church community and become part of its vision. It develops on the assumption that Discipleship for leadership provides the biblical basis for developing disciples who go on to become disciple-makers. Although time restraint makes it impossible to measure the effectiveness of this study in developing disciples who go on to become disciple-makers, this evaluation measures an individual's growth in conviction, intentionality, and resolve for making disciples. These factors include: spiritual preparation, leadership buy-in, the on-going communication of vision and philosophy, a healthy launch, congregational buy-in and successfully passing on the philosophical DNA of making disciples. The on-going communication of vision and philosophy was determined to be the most critical factor in this change process. This study also relates these factors to John Kotter's eight-stage process of change from his book Leading change (1996). This thesis will illustrate the process First Presbyterian Church of Burlington went through in order to shift the deacons' role from one of historical stewardship/maintenance leadership to one of pastoral care. Members of the church were led through a discernment process in order to identify and utilize these spiritual gifts. Prayer and preaching were the foundation for both the preacher and the laity throughout the change process. This thesis also breaks new ground by incorporating newcomers/seekers into the sermon formation process. The training used an action and reflection model. The chaplains actively engaged in ministry while reflecting upon the theological basis for that ministry. The Confessions of Saint Augustine of Hippo was the primary resource for spiritual self-examination. Chaplains need to be spiritually ready for ministry in war. This training occurred during 2003-2004 at Chapel Five, Fort Dix, New Jersey. Specialization often controls the curriculum in Bible colleges and seminaries.  The apostle Paul was a missionary; he labored in a missionary context; he was 'doing mission' as he wrote his epistles. This major project explores the integration of these missiological realities with the theological in a Bible college course on the Book of Romans. Though these Koreans have been living as Soviets under the old Soviet socialist system, their ethnic identity had been challenged since the October Revolution of 1917.  Now, after the independence of Uzbekistan in 1991, they face once more a crisis in their political and ethnic situation. Due to these circumstances, the identity of Uzbekistan Koreans has gone through changes and become assimilated into the environment. This research presents, in detail, the process of transformation of the ethnic identity of Koreans who were participants in particular historic circumstances of Uzbekistan. The research will analyze from a missiological point of view the significance of  the preservation of and the change in ethnic identity of a minority in a multi-ethnic nation, and suggests a model of mission strategy to Koreans in Uzbekistan based on that analysis. The context of this project is a Presbyterian congregation in Chicago which includes African immigrants, African Americans, Euro-Americans, persons with chronic mental illness and those whose quirkiness has avoided medical detection. The author explores how people who are displaced from their cultures and/or families of origin experience the church as 'home'.
