A pastor's identity informs how a preacher witnesses to the Word of God. Using The Witness of Preaching by Thomas G. Long, I discuss the various images he used to illustrate the roles of preachers: the herald, the paster, the storyteller/poet, and finally, the witness. I have drawn upon my own experiences as a child raised in the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod and how I moved from a theology based in fear to a theology based in grace. As a secondary discourse I draw on Edwin H. Friedman's A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix. Friedman uses the term 'non-anxious' and 'well-differentiated' to define these aspects of leadership; throughout this thesis I discuss what it means to become a leader and bear witness to God's Word as a preacher."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133844493041665,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:25:44.739Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:49:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:02:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b1277a04-2eaf-46ca-a560-80b667af65e2","accessControl_ssim":["a09a8463-24ea-4baa-8c3d-63d1102e518f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Whose sermon is it, anyway? preaching the testimony of the people"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:49:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:14:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["213b24a4-ee98-4a60-929a-f968d2376dae"],"hasLease_ssim":["2be29846-a661-41c6-bc8b-bcca4a1fd6e6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul S Allen"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Judith Visser"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Communities--Religious aspects","Preaching--Social aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis illustrates how a congregation became more fully a community of theological reflection and experienced more deeply its communal identity when people became conversation partners with each other and the preacher. Datum collected from pre-curriculum and post-curriculum questionnaires support the effectiveness of the disciplemaking material."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131921069113344,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:10.419Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:49:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:18:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"decc8867-8ffe-4c99-b6c8-5de1d4d56bf2","accessControl_ssim":["c8899260-b76c-49cc-8123-022b00a9727f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["New visions of church: assessing ecclesiologies voiced by the un-churched in planning a multiethnic new church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:49:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:30:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1e92e1a1-6df9-4db0-9a27-e0a529486fcb"],"hasLease_ssim":["2d46b5a2-d534-44a5-907c-d70a8bf05f75"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["D Cameron Murchison"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Nancy M Salisbury"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Mission of the church","Non-church-affiliated people","Public opinion","Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Amidst uncertainty in mainline churches, the project thesis is that un-churched persons' concepts of church can help shape new local church forms and be faithful to the church's mission. From a 'missional church' perspective, this research provides practical, biblical, and theological rationales to seek outsiders'visions of church. It presents findings from 'on-the-street' interviews with un-churched persons. Their images of church were rich, emphasized a communal faith dimension, and confirmed biblical and theological themes. Details of the cases were examined thoroughly, using document analysis methodology known as 'Constant Comparison' to demonstrate major themes in the change experience. The change experience of this staff was assessed using a survey tool, and then reviewed from the point of view of the theology and literature outlined in the paper. The results of the study are nine valid outcomes regarding the application of change management principles in the context of the staff studied.
