The spirituality of prayer is vital both in an individual life and in the life of a community.  When faced with personal difficulties, family issues, social conflicts, and relationship problems, we pray and ask others to pray for us.  It is natural for us to ask for intercessory prayer when troubles come in our daily lives.  A theology of prayer regards prayer as a key to all these troubles. The process for this study included three parts: 1) a survey to determine the congregation's knowledge and attitudes toward personal testimonies, 2) a twelve-week period where personal testimonies were included in the Sunday morning worship services, and 3) a survey following the twelve-week period to determine how knowledge and attitudes may have changed.  Attendance records were also studied.  Attendance records may indicate growth. After the departure of their long-term pastor, South Church faced internal, communal, and cultural transitions. This project used narrative tools to reconnect the congregation to their biblical, communal and personal faith stories. The three tools were 1) a Lenten-Eastertide sermon series; 2) remembering the church's history using their 250th anniversary banners; and 3) an Appreciative Inquiry process. She interviewed women preachers and male preachers who have had a history of supporting, affirming and celebrating women in ministry and in leadership roles in the church. Each lesson includes as historical description of slavery and an explanation of a spiritual. The curriculum focuses on the public and coded, secret meanings in spirituals. Bible references as source inspiration are provided with each spiritual. A professional panel of twenty-one educators evaluated the curriculum. They found it was an objective presentation of the history of slavery and the spirituals. The particular focus of the paper is finding resources to deal with remaining trauma after the conflict has been officially declared settled.  This paper offers the framework of illness narrative as a resource for understanding and healing church conflict.  Resources from biblical and theological sources are also explored. It is as if we live together yet inhabit different worlds. This project enlargeds the possibility of discourse between people quite different from one another in interest, theological outlook, power and age -- yet united in the exploration of narrative connections.
