By studying the contemporary and historical literature on the subject, examining the Scriptures, including Paul's thorn in the flesh, and conducting interviews with seasoned preachers who themselves battle chronic pain, the author identifies some common challenges and unique opportunities that those who preach in pain face as they seek to minister effectively. One consists of a detailed and systematic review of the content of twelve central courses currently being taught at the Canada Institute of Linguistics as part of a program of training for the role of 'Translation Specialist.' The content of each of these courses is mapped to a set of competencies expected of those who are to serve in this role. The other component consists of an analysis of survey results in which translation specialists, their supervisors and mother-tongue translators reflect on actual field performance and the effectiveness of prefield training in preparation for fieldwork. To address these problems a model continuing education course was designed and presented. Both pre- and postcourse evaluations of participants were conducted. My thesis-project tested a five-week annual small group curriculum at Harvest Bible Chapel and the results strongly recommend the use of the curriculum. This is God's living system. The biblical account of God's creation and new creation form the basis for understanding living system theology. The 'Expanded Jeremiah Model' (Jeremiah 29:7) provides for the church a dynamic and interactive paradigm for discovering and participating with God's living system. Repentance is necessary to be prepared to address the possibility of counterproductivity in a fallen world. A group learning exercise called 'hexagoning' is utilized as a discernment tool for Central Assembly of god Church, Boston, which allows the congregation to understand God's gracious work in the church and in the city. Subjects addressed are calling to pastoral ministry, and competence/training for pastoral ministry. A literature review on the subject of leadership development is offered.
