A case study model approach was used to gather data from three churches at least fifty years old that have undergone some form of revitalization. The leadership focus was twofold: first, inquiry was made on the kind of leadership structures or systems that the churches had in place, and second, consideration was given to the person of the senior leader: his strengths, weaknesses, and other personal traits. Several conclusions were reached throughout this study, with the overarching research conclusion being that church contexts that are best positioned for revitalization are ones in which both the leader and the leadership system can be described as healthy or pursuing greater health. With the understanding that God is the ultimate source of spiritual renewal, this study focuses on what we can control: the environment of leadership within the church. As such, consideration is given to exploring what healthy systems and healthy leaders might look like and to understanding the challenges that accompany this difficult work of revitalizing a traditional church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131288293343232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:45:06.957Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:43:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:32:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"804c4e2c-663f-44af-86fe-c13b0b069be2","accessControl_ssim":["ac72b9dd-30f9-4283-8605-a89bc176a49f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The courageous and compassionate pastor: an exploration of the role of the local church pastor in the renewal efforts of the declining denomination"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:43:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:55:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c312b336-9e30-41c2-a740-395db05aaf43"],"hasLease_ssim":["fa44b5bf-e45d-4beb-8e94-c2e8dae4e746"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jerry C Wofford","D Scott Barfoot"],"year_tesim":["2015"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Chad A McMullin"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Clergy","Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)","Church renewal--Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project was focused on clarifying the leadership roles for pastors within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The project identified eight issues that help clarify the individual local context of preacher and audience, and also a taxonomy of preaching in three categories was developed: related to the text; related to theme or focus of the message; and related to delivery."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715198998675456,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:42:42.131Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:41:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:22:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"de20e772-7d3e-45c0-99a2-79b9ba0d5fd4","accessControl_ssim":["f60dd4dc-4ad8-424a-9b67-c63c94fb113c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Holy Spirit gift activation, mentoring and leadership training to increase church attendance and godly commitment in emerging adults"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:41:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:29:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f579d59f-67e7-4cd8-84e8-e2fd5d72e6c2"],"hasLease_ssim":["f7a22adf-7ab9-4ef5-a070-4a53cfca8a5a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Peter Bellini"],"year_tesim":["2015"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Nina M Thompson"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Commitment to the church","Non-church-affiliated people","Youth--Religious life","Church work with youth","Church attendance"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In 2000, research showed that nearly one-quarter of people ages 18-29 described their religion as 'none.' Hypothesis testing measured attitudinal changes related to awareness, actions, perception and reasoning. The researcher identified three areas that are central to this process: reproducible evangelism and discipleship, reproducible church planting, and reproducible leadership. The researcher studied the effect of short cycle multiplicative discipleship growth, rather than simple church incremental growth, focusing on instances where the pastor utilized the CPM methodology. The study employed a qualitative design, using semi-structured interviews with nine demographically diverse pastors from five different denominations. The unit of analysis was the method used for successful discipleship multiplication, and the data was analyzed using the constant comparative method. The findings indicated that the pastors who took the catalytic role of igniting discipleship movements modeled discipleship for their congregations not only by teaching, but by actually fulfilling the Great Commission, looking for persons of peace, initiating DBS groups with unchurched people, and creating a cascade of multigenerational discipleship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131401761849344,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:46:55.169Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:41:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:31:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"13c8b1b1-97ff-467c-abe7-36c3a359614e","accessControl_ssim":["9ada4e31-9eb6-4f47-bb29-9b00c5eddcce"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A New Testament model of hospitality for the African American Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:41:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:42:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["31f95c2d-1cc3-4721-be73-f0ba7d8dcfd2"],"hasLease_ssim":["08efa328-9a90-40d1-b7a8-d88d8756543c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia"],"advisor_tesim":["David D Grafton"],"year_tesim":["2015"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Charmaine L Green"],"publisher_tesim":["The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia"],"subject_tesim":["Hospitality--Religious aspects--Christianity","African American churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The 21st century has ushered many changes into the African American church (attire, personal expressions, family structures) which reflect differences between individuals entering the church and those reared in the church and have challenged the status quo of many more traditional members thus resulting in the waning of hospitality practices in many African American churches and prompting the need for a resurgence of hospitality to again make the church welcoming of all.
