The leadership training was formatted as a small group experience so that participants with no prior involvement in a small group both learned leadership skills and grew in appreciation of small group dynamics. Forty interviews were conducted, resulting in five implications: expectations of leadership by laity, congregational identity, congregational connections, life factors, and expectations of laity by leadership. The author found four themes; control and choices, faith, family diagnosis, doing versus dying. It discusses not only the elderly population demographics in the U.S., but also the necessity for ongoing provision of preaching and ministry to them. It examines the current literature and position of the Church on the provision of pastoral care at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. We also explores different biblical responses to the ongoing mystery of suffering, sickness, aging, and healing. How did some biblical characters grapple with their suffering? How did they perceive the goodness of God in the face of it? This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the genre and theological, contextual, and historico-cultural background of some biblical texts concerning suffering, aging, and healing. We will demonstrate the Church's understanding and renewal of preaching in the last fifty years through a review of current literature and official documents of the Church. Though this review will reflect the perspective of the Catholic Church, this chapter also offers an overview of what constitutes Christian preaching and what its rich history, renewal, and methodology have to offer the Christian Church in general. We examine the current practices and ministry of preaching at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. A review of current literature on preaching to the elderly population enriched the understanding of what it means to preach an effective homily to them. Chapter Five demonstrates a four-part workshop that will aid chaplains and ministers to be more effective preachers to the target population. Primarily, respondents found the resource to be understandable because of its concise directions, clearly written items, and understandable vocabulary. Secondarily, respondents agreed that the resource reflected biblical values, revealed biblical leadership principles, and was biblically based. This paper starts with an identification of common factors for church growth, then specifically exposits systematic changes that can be implemented in PCUSA churches to create a healthier culture. The hypotheses of this paper describe three areas of potential change to grow healthier medium-sized PCUSA churches: the size of the local church leadership board, the implementation of policy governance practices, and the introduction of transformational leadership training in the local church. Four disciplers and their protégés were interviewed and recorded for the purpose of discovering what, in their personal opinion, were the essential ingredients in developing and training strong and growing disciples of Jesus.  The results indicated my top three hypothesizes were not confirmed. Their top three elements were the relationship, the centrality of the Word, and the application of what the disciple was learning.
