Nevertheless, Christian congregations and their ministers can, through courage and faith, overcome ungodly rationalizations for ungodly sexual beliefs and actions by setting out the godly tenets of sexual righteousness and supporting them with valid Biblical argument. Chapter one introduces the thesis while providing a methodology for implementation and application of Biblical truth related to sexual identity and practice. Chapter two chronicles the decline of sexual morality in western societies and identities the pattern of thought driving cultural change. Chapter three speaks to the evangelical missteps in addressing the sexual revolution and points toward a comprehensive plan of correction. Chapter four seeks to establish a systematic theology of sexual identity and practice while chapter five speaks to guidelines for preaching sensitive material within a congregational setting. In the final two chapters, an example sermon series is provided and evaluated to reveal the usefulness of such an approach in the local church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132644439752704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:06:40.279Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:40:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:56:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"49e4650c-a977-4d5b-bf95-783d7ef7b305","accessControl_ssim":["f5d81d55-4037-40ba-bb85-6704bea31be8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Comparative Analysis of the Christ-Centered Preaching Methods of Sidney Greidanus and Bryan Chapell and Their Effectiveness for Preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:40:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:17:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["07cea250-ba4a-42e5-9185-fcdddd69f527"],"hasLease_ssim":["f82382ea-e02f-4b95-b3bb-aca915bf00ce"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Matthew Fender McKellar"],"year_tesim":["2017"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Todd P Gray"],"keyword_tesim":["Jesus Christ in the Liturgics","Sermon preparation"],"publisher_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible--Criticism, interpretation","Preaching--Study and teaching","Bible. People from both realms frequently align Christianity with a deontological system of ethics. However, such a system of duty ethics often leads to a self-righteous legalism both groups would oppose. The locus of scripture is not to teach believers to do, but rather to become and the doing will follow. The paper interacts with the teachings of Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas to establish both an historical and theological basis for virtue ethics. The church departed her normal practice of virtue theory and replaced it with deontology. It is time for the church to recover the biblical system of virtue ethics. Deontology is not set aside, but used as a guide for assessing the virtues required. Believers must especially cultivate the virtues of faith, hope and love in order to recover the reputation of the Church as a holy and reliable institution that can point the world to the One True God.
