The study, grounded in linguistics and language theory, examines fifty contemporary and denominationally significant sermons delivered over a ten-year period. The findings reveal that the sermon metaphors reflect the faith’s basic values, but they do so in ways that are conflictual. The metaphors are less prevalent, more commonplace, and more narrowly interpreted than might be expected in Unitarian Universalist preaching. The major implication of the study is that the overall metaphorical thrust of Unitarian Universalism is towards issues related to social justice and away from metaphors of transcendence, suggesting a de-ontologized and de-cosmologized emphasis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860320750927872,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:27:05.471Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"72815a86-ed7b-4d3d-87e0-699f0c58741a","accessControl_ssim":["3373b047-4490-41bd-8c1a-171835bb303b"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Re-reading resurrection and the providence of God in the Heidelberg Catechism: a 21st century scientific-theological view"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5388d1d4-5eeb-48ec-8c6a-ae3496e3e252"],"hasLease_ssim":["a0a85cd5-c652-4ac0-aac8-31b0af6e7d9b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Using insights and approaches from feminist, womanist, and other liberation theologians, it also strives to remember Jesus more clearly in his economic, political, and religious context. At the heart of this theological reconstruction is the conviction that Jesus offers salvation by making God’s “shalom justice” real on the earth through the entirety of his ministry, death, and resurrection. Each aspect of Jesus’ life, including the cross, demonstrates God’s ultimate solidarity with those who are oppressed and violated, as well as God’s capacity to bring forth healing and life out of suffering and death. This salvation is not only individual but lived out in communities which join in God’s work in the world. Thus, we find salvation in “shalom justice households” which embrace and continue Jesus’ work for liberation, justice, and shalom."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860320587350018,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:27:05.316Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d1d38bea-1dee-4705-baa4-68116457a454","accessControl_ssim":["97d1899f-4db4-4036-a3f6-7c05c7c832fa"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Hear our voices: pastoral care for the LGBTQ community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19baf683-9cf4-4e0a-8d54-5fab8f753976"],"hasLease_ssim":["ad25f15c-05b6-419f-ab1d-e74be941f416"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It is quite disheartening that some church leaders no longer show integrity and accountability. Church leaders fail in their responsibilities to others in the church because most of them are not conscious of the fact that they can be tempted to misuse authority. The shepherding of the church is in the hands of the Bishops, Pastors, Teachers, Evangelists, Elders, etc. Yet, this is not an excuse to abuse the influence granted to them by exploiting people, misdirecting and misapplying the resources at their disposal. Promotion from one position to another in the church is not to make leaders forgetful of the fact that they are called to represent Christ, the Chief Shepherd, and Bridegroom of the church, as stewards.\r\nSome leaders are fine Christians until they are selected to positions of leadership. Once the position is gained, they start teaching the people in demeaning and derogatory ways and sometimes making excessive demands on the people as well as showing some levels of dishonesty and non-accountability. Also, church leaders fail in their bids to discharge their responsibilities acceptably. Besides ignorance, they can be tempted to abuse their authority. The truth is that the role of Bishops, Pastors, Evangelists and other church leaders are not given so that they might hold down the people and have them serve the leader’s needs and wants, but rather that they, the leaders, equip and elevate those they lead to serve Jesus and change the world. We have the example of Jesus’ leadership who came to serve and not to be served.\r\nWhen church leaders understand that the authority God has given them is not for themselves, but for all sorts and conditions of people placed under them, then the virtue of integrity and accountability will be strengthened. Church leaders are exposed to the temptation to profit because of their privileges. When church leaders decide to profit from the privilege of leadership, it gives people reason to question their motives. That notwithstanding, Pastors can be appreciated with godly generosity by the members of the church. With devotional exercises done to curb or reduce the prevalent level of lack of integrity and accountability not only in the Lutheran Church of Nigeria but also in other churches as well, leaders who are still involved in wielding authority selfishly — the exact opposite of practicing faith in Christ Jesus, are sure to mend their ways. Peterson puts it nicely that “faith is an act of submission to the Lordship of Christ, a willing response to his commands.”1\r\nThis project is conducted to fill the existing gap by developing curriculum to strengthen integrity and accountability of the leadership of the Lutheran Church of Nigeria.\r\n1 Eugene H. Listening to the stories of post-Christian people gives voice to a growing population of people who find themselves unaffected by the voice of the church and find little or no connection to the Christian message. Pastors and worship leaders listening to the stories of these people can better draw out themes in the liturgy that will communicate not just to Christian, but post-Christian people as well. The purpose of my project is to help worship leaders and designers consider how they can speak to and be heard by both Christian and post-Christian people in worship. The findings of my project will illustrate the ways post-Christian people might best engage in the liturgy and offer insights to worship leaders and designers on how to enable this engagement."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9319"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135670237921280,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:45.905Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:37:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:50:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"033e2065-12db-4d7e-97bf-9528f2dce723","accessControl_ssim":["8657ddef-2e71-45c9-b3d2-8a9a9b6cfedf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching and missional engagement : indwelling the Word, performing the Word, engaging the World"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:37:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:12:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f80271db-6d82-406a-8167-67ee7c9f6502"],"hasLease_ssim":["8f12e6be-1409-4edd-94db-7b1228726eca"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kyle J.A. Through conversations with members of the Pillar congregation, as well as reflections from other pastors who practice a similar homiletical method, there is evidence that this homiletical method influences congregational missional engagement. The process is long and requires patience, but the stories suggest there is a connection. As this project unfolds, I do hope to demonstrate through the lives of some of the participants in Pillar’s life and worship that there is a relationship between indwelling the Word for the sermon and a congregation’s missional life. I intend to offer a homiletical vision rooted in the missionary work of Leslie Newbigin, and the pastoral work of Eugene Peterson. This vision is demonstrated in the church’s first sermon by the Apostle Peter at Pentecost. A homiletical vision that calls the preacher to indwell the story of God as it is given in Scripture and offered to the people of God such that the missional engagement of a congregation increases. I intend to offer a homiletical method congruent with this vision that engages Newbigin’s notion of indwelling the word and Peterson’s notion of the pastoral ministry. In this way it will bring into conversation two leading voices in different sectors of the Western church today who are often not recognized as calling the church to a similar vision. A consequent contribution of this project will be to identify and introduce a theological paradigm operative in both Newbigin and Peterson that neither clearly articulate as a pattern."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9314"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135377235378176,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:06.476Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:37:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3e0e0592-b418-43f7-ad0e-421bbfee5ffc","accessControl_ssim":["86fca164-e746-4da3-9e4a-5aaedc73281f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Gospel : the power of God for salvation mobilizing the church for evangelism to Muslims"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:37:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:55:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["757846c9-e37a-4c5b-ac95-9f2b6e611b7b"],"hasLease_ssim":["51803b2d-904a-4e66-a366-a93fa1358e89"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Many current Islamic regimes have been destabilized contributing to Muslims experiencing cognitive dissonance, disillusionment and despair. Christians now have the opportunity and urgent commission to witness to Muslims on their block, at their workplace, attending schools with their children, and attending universities. The scale of the upheaval in Islam demands an all-Church emergency mobilization training effort to fast track Church engagement with Muslims.Evangelical leaders that I have worked with my whole ministry career are asking for Biblically faithful training for evangelism and missions. Many existing courses on Islam commend highly contextualized methodologies, dynamic equivalent models, peacemaking and friendship. They do not teach the fundamentals of evangelism, of communicating the Gospel for the conversion of Muslims from Islam to Christianity. The methods of research employed are narrative inquiry in collaborative action research with colleagues having vast experience in missions, evangelism, apologetics and discipling Muslim people. Field notes, roundtable reflection, interviews and Kirkpatrick’s evaluative process collected and gleaned best practices from case studies and from the Engage Course classes that have been offered so far."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135498400432128,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:02.028Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:27:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:06:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fd6157a8-20eb-4f2e-8a5a-49135a0ff733","accessControl_ssim":["7690a0c9-ed33-4048-aa30-b3b6a95b156b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Exploring And Addressing The Influence Of Local African Traditional Religionon South African Churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:27:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:22:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["aca4476e-e9f6-4400-a10d-2926d66ac2d5"],"hasLease_ssim":["1758c51c-51b5-4664-9f08-e82bf1015937"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David` Seiver Ph.D.","William Donahue Ph.D.","Doug Wilson Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The pastors, mostly from South Africa, participated in a Delphi research process that promoted individual input about each person’s encounter with ATR issues in the first round. This input was reviewed and prioritized by the participants in the second two rounds identifying the five most significant challenges of ATR to their local churches. The study concluded with a roundtable discussion intending to address the influence of ATR and whether a theological statement would be helpful in that endeavor. Because the environment being addressed was a pastors’ conference on exegesis, the goal was to influence the preaching of these pastors in a way that would address the influence of ATR. This final project goal found a low level of support and met with some resistance."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720443134869504,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:06:03.329Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":113,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
