Inclusion is the active, ongoing, and intentional practice of incorporating all people into the life of the church. First Congregational Church of Anchorage is a member of the Open and Affirming coalition; but are they as inclusive as they claim to be. This ethnographic case study of First Congregational Church of Anchorage utilizes a congregation-wide survey, semi-structured interviews, and auto-ethnographic reflection to assess the congregation’s inclusion of queer people of faith. This research provides a rubric for assessing a congregation’s practices of inclusion grounded in Alfred Adler’s Gemeinschaftsgefühl.\r\nFocusing on democracy, community, and belonging, this research determines the three lived values of FCCAK; exposing the tension of being an Open and Affirming congregation that allows homophobia in their community. Chauvet describes the Eucharist as a form of symbolic exchange and central to the creation of Christian identity. This thesis demonstrates compatibility between Chauvet and sodomitical theology on the effects of sin and concern for the other, yet a queer critique of Chauvet’s Eucharistic theology identifies elided patriarchal and heterosexist dynamics in his account and inattention to the “structural queer.” Critiques of Tonstad’s theology are engaged, and suggestions for future research are provided."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/b0596ffe-f31b-4a9a-893b-c5ab3df6ba47?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["b0596ffe-f31b-4a9a-893b-c5ab3df6ba47"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["b0596ffe-f31b-4a9a-893b-c5ab3df6ba47"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["jacob.may@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1862476728375443456,"timestamp":"2026-04-14T19:50:20.756Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2026-04-13T20:56:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-04-21T19:27:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a5a7fb39-59f4-417f-bf4f-77913bea8819","accessControl_ssim":["ad27ce1c-e628-4f13-a8eb-90d78e2dae1b"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["e1a577e7-f722-4987-886c-286594629c5b"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["e1a577e7-f722-4987-886c-286594629c5b"],"depositor_ssim":["jbeverly@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["jbeverly@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Animals and Sexuality in the Song of Songs"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2026-04-13T20:56:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2026-04-14T19:39:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["620c6111-37a1-4d08-992f-fb63fff5d670"],"hasLease_ssim":["fc315fd6-4f1b-4758-9ce0-c4fde061d6a0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["PhD"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2026"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jared Beverly"],"keyword_tesim":["sexuality and the Bible","animal studies","animals and the Bible","Song of Songs"],"subject_tesim":["Bible. This dissertation examines the nonhuman animal imagery of the Song alongside both biblical scholarship and animal studies. It argues that the Song presents human sexuality as a part of nonhuman animal sexuality, a shared field of experience rather than a superior human domain over an inferior animal domain. In addition, this common experience of sexuality across human and nonhuman animals has the effect of blurring the lines between species, making it unclear where the human ends and the animal begins. The dissertation works through the Song’s animals group by group, beginning with wild herbivores, then domesticated herbivores, then predatory mammals, and finally birds, showing how the love poetry of the Song can be read in ways that question the human/animal binary. It concludes by reflecting that if the lovers of the Song can so value one another, perhaps also the nonhuman animals they use to represent one another deserve ethical consideration."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/e1a577e7-f722-4987-886c-286594629c5b?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["e1a577e7-f722-4987-886c-286594629c5b"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["PhD Dissertations"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["ecd30fb9-8e3a-4cbc-8acc-ebda4d673d16"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["e1a577e7-f722-4987-886c-286594629c5b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["jbeverly@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1863109462359801856,"timestamp":"2026-04-21T19:27:22.906Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2026-04-09T21:54:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-04-16T20:50:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9d21ffaa-9ce0-4fa1-a63d-d2e3c0db7ca2","accessControl_ssim":["e64cde5a-ced4-4a7c-8363-430e74239266"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["91de760b-610e-4c8d-add5-17607c1da697"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["91de760b-610e-4c8d-add5-17607c1da697"],"depositor_ssim":["bilal.elsakka@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["bilal.elsakka@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Architecture of Reconciliation: Restorative Justice for Afghan Refugee Youth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2026-04-09T21:54:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2026-04-16T20:49:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8c269912-26d4-4cc8-9a53-b97f4998c27f"],"hasLease_ssim":["b2c6866b-6c9d-4fb8-a149-f1ff9657cd67"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2026"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Elsakka, Bilal"],"keyword_tesim":["Restorative justice, Afghan refugee youth, Sunni Shia reconciliation, Afghan diaspora, refugee integration, Sacramento Afghan community, Islamic ethics, futuwwah, Prophetic model of justice, community healing, sectarian conflict, youth mentorship, Reda Center, social cohesion, trauma and displacement, faith-based community work, Muslim youth development, decolonizing justice, peer mentorship, intercommunal reconciliation"],"subject_tesim":["Subject Field: Islam, Religious Ethics, Social Justice, Conflict Management, Religions--Relations, Youth--Religious Life","Location Field: Afghanistan, United States"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis explores how a culturally grounded model of restorative justice can support Afghan refugee youth in Sacramento as they work through sectarian tension and the hardships of resettlement. It raises concerns about how the United States Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) often measures success by paperwork rather than by the real, human work of meeting refugees’ needs, and it highlights the deeper structural barriers these youth face. The thesis then offers a path through a focused initiative at the Reda Center, drawing on the decolonizing framework of Muhammad Asadullah and the Islamic ethic of futuwwah, spiritual chivalry. By turning to Prophetic examples of reconciliation and building strong peer mentorship, this model imagines a living community practice that helps these youth rise above Sunni-Shia divides and grow into deeper, more genuine care for one another.
