Most churches, however, need assistance in increasing the effectiveness of the congregation's ability to give care.  The writer developed a three-month training program for twelve persons to study the theology of caregiving, stages of human development, and caring skills.  Following training the trainees entered hurting situations under the writer's supervision. The paper discribes how this need is being met in two smaller membership churches through the use and evaluation of 'Body Builders: Exercises in Leadership Development for Elders of Smaller Membership Churches,' a training manual written for the project.  The vital characteristics of smaller membership churches and the nature and origin of the office of elder are presented that these elders and churches may more effectively function in the upbuilding of the body of Christ. In order to determine the needs of singles, data was collected from two sources.  The first source was a survey of literature on the subject and the second source was from singles, themselves, through open-ended interviews.  An analysis of a theological perspective of singleness was also developed.  The design for ministry was then developed from these sources of data. A study experience is conducted in two churches served by the author.  The study included both an introduction to feminist theology and ministry as well as an evaluation of the author's ministry in relation to these perspectives.  Also, thirty churches were surveyed, fifteen served by clergywomen, fifteen served by clergymen. Participants were primarily interested in religious ideas that answered questions about how God operates in relationship with the world and life after death.
