It focuses intentionally on Centre Church in Malden, a dowtown parish that is declining. Through these groups the fellowship is being renewed, the laity involved and the outreach mission of the church extended.  The pastor's role is--visionary, inspirer, equipper, encourager and exemplar. The project identifies congregational needs, strengths, limitations, challenges, possibilities, and signs of hope. A pastor should be in constant dialogue with his or her own narcissism.  Secondly, a pastor needs to feel compassion for the inflicted individual or congregation. Also a pastor needs to feel empathy towards the narcissistic individual or congregation.  Even with constant monitoring and fine tuning, confrontation will cause narcissistic injury followed by anger and rage. Findings include information on who these people are, how they viewed their pastoral work while in it, the pressures and processes of leaving it, and how they experience life with the pastorate in their past and a new career before them.  The survey shows that, according to overall mean and rank, the primary stress in ministry and, according to higher values only, the major reason for the respondents leaving the pastorate is church conflict. The ex-pastor experienced role conflict and, while his exodus was multi-determined, he sought for consistency between his individual values and his occupation. The paper uses the Wesleyan quadrilateral and an analysis of the local church setting as a basis for establishing role priorities.  The paper includes ten attributes which the writer considers essential for effective ministry.  Senior ministers should take into account their strengths and weaknesses regarding these attributes in order to establish priorities in a realistic and practical manner. The project was researched with a local church board of administration consisting of nine men.  There  were two facets of the project.  An educational emphasis employed twelve school of ministry sessions.  The experiential impact was highlighted by ten ministry reports from the board members.  Some of the results included a greater awareness that all Christians are ministers; an increased understanding of and involvement in ministry.
