Though resisted by most of mainstream Pentecostalism, it is the author's contention that 'Sonship' ideas heavily influence much of modern Pentecostal teaching. It identifies some leading ministries who were instrumental in establishing 'Sonship' within the mainstream of the Pentecostal Movement. Chapter one reviews the history of Emley's Hill United Methodist Church from its founding six years after the founding of Methodism in America in 1784 through the first two hundred years, which were most notably marked by a constant cycle of part-time pastors.  Chapter two lays out the polity framework of the United Methodist Church within which the author had to operate.  Chapter three cites pertinent readings that impacted the author's understanding of the setting and the problems faced.  Chapter four presents the project design, describing the work used in gathering the data necessary for renewal. This should be a time of great hope as it can assess its place in the Kingdom of God and plan for its role in the future.  Currently the functional ministries of the church are in question as to their effectiveness both within the local body and in their impact on the local community. This practicum/project is centered on the church as a manifestation of the Kingdom of God. As part of the Kingdom, the ecclesia can be evaluated and effectively measured as to its functional ministries.  In this project, the following steps were taken. The methodology employed provided ways of measuring the church biblically, theologically, practically, and in terms of its spiritual vitality. The chief finding was the need to break out of old patterns and practices of ministry. The psychological theories that are integrated for this thesis include Family Systems Theory, Structural Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. The thesis was applied to a young married couple with the use of the Taylor Johnson Temperament Analysis, The Personality Self-Portrait by Multi-Health Systems, and the Prepare/Enrich Inventory assessment tools. Benedictine values of stability, obedience and conversion are interpreted for a church community. The context is a small suburban Episcopal church beginning a new ministry with their recently arrived priest. In various group feedback sessions, listeners expressed their understanding of how Benedictine values can shape the spiritual life of the church community and become part of its vision. The intent of this project is to develop a framework that creates a community, whereby the heart and subsequent actions of the leader create a culture in which covenant is likely to develop.  The author's hypothesis is that key leader behaviors model a culture of covenant.  These behaviors were defined and prepared as a survey pre-test amongst Coastlands Executive Team members. It develops on the assumption that Discipleship for leadership provides the biblical basis for developing disciples who go on to become disciple-makers. Although time restraint makes it impossible to measure the effectiveness of this study in developing disciples who go on to become disciple-makers, this evaluation measures an individual's growth in conviction, intentionality, and resolve for making disciples. Although fingers are being pointed in all directions, no one seems to want to take responsibility for the collapse.  The church has become an organization that treats symptoms, but continues to overlook the problem.  This thesis will look past those symptoms in order to obtain a clear diagnosis of the underlying problem that exists in the church today.  It will be discovered that polarization is that problem.  It is the byproduct of years of theological, doctrinal, and missional conflict between the two dominant political polarities of the church: the progressive liberal polarity and the conservative evangelical polarity. It will be discovered that the agendas of each polarity are guided by a long established set of intrinsic core values.
