The research reflects nine weeks of classroom instruction in a ninth grade Old Testament class of 25 girls in all-girl Catholic school in Louisville, Kentucky, and details the instructor's educational and theological assumptions that inform his understanding of the learning process. What steps are pastors taking to help listeners put the preached Word into practice?  Pastors of the Southeastern District of the Evangelical Free Church of America were polled to determine what actions they take before, during, and after preaching to facilitate listener response.  Findings revealed strength in sermon preparation, construction, and delivery.  Preachers indicated weakness, however, in developing the call for response and subsequent follow-through.  Few pastors provided opportunity for listeners to plan and practice personal change. The challenge is to get the congregation to understand the meaning of a servant church.  The conclusion of the research revealed a need to revamp the organizational structure of the church. Church leadership went through a self-evaluation and drew up a ten-year financial report.  They designed a questionnaire and used it to analyze change.  The minister delivered six sermons on financial stewardship.  Findings showed that attitudes did not generate the shortfall in giving.  The denomination sets goals too high.  Members gave generously to a variety of causes.  Leaders then guided small group discussions to encourage members, discuss allocation of funds, and make suggestions for the 1993 budget. As such, the church seeks to live and minister by an Anabaptist ecclesiology which understands faith being lived out in a community of equals.  Keeping this vision before God's people is the function of ministry for which all members are responsible.  This ministry can be of a salaried model, but the times are also calling the church to examine again the early Pauline vision of plural ministry whereby persons with gifts are called from the local context for specific purposes of service.  The key to any model of ministry is an understanding of leadership as non-hierarchical and inclusive. The Roman Catholic Church of Chicago has the potential to be a sign and an instrument of the Kingdom, serving as a crucial and a powerful force in empowering poor people, stemming the tide of poverty in the metropolitan area.  This study addresses the challenge of transforming the Campaign for Human Development from a successful director-centered, anti-poverty program into a dynamic movement among Catholic people.  The founding vision needs recasting to serve as a catalyst for people of faith to work toward social transformation.  Ideally, the transformed situation will be marked by the addition of more active leaders, all versed in the founding vision and its potential for change in today's church and world.
