Particular emphasis is given to exploring preaching and leadership styles which encourage meaningful change.  A process was developed for drafting, revising, and approving a mission statement using sermons, surveys, committee evaluations, and congregational information meetings.  This model for change places a high priority on the role of pastor as preacher, liturgist, and theologian. Designed to introduce adult study groups and individuals to a deeper experience of the sacrament, the project focuses on five 'facets of grace': koinonia, anamnesis, eucharistia, thusia and eschaton.  Koinonia is God's grace in our connectedness to God and to one another at the table. Anamnesis is God's grace in our remembrance.  In recognizing Christ at the table we are enabled to remember our own identity as children as God. Eucharistia is God's grace in our thanksgiving that we are claimed and named by God, and are moved to respond in joyful thanksgiving for the grace we have received.  Thusia is God's grace in our sacrifice of ourselves as we offer ourselves in loving service to the world. Such change in vision and structure requires new wineskins. A cathedral model of base communities builds on existing expressions of the church's historical journey to suggest an ecclesial model suitable for urban Old First congregations.  A theological and ecclesiological base is developed for the church as a mediating community between society and new creation, using both cathedral and cell concepts to develop institutional structure. A questionnaire was administered to ascertain how lay and clergy leaders understand spiritual leadership.  A theology of spiritual leadership is presented, discussing the scriptural and historical roots of spiritual leadership and describing the spiritual leader in terms of servanthood, empowerment, discernment, spiritual experience, prayer, and sanctification. This was tested through theological studies, interviews, questionnaires, congregational Bible studies, and dialogue with district pastors.  In conclusion, the author found a unanimous acceptance of the thesis, but mixed views concerning integrating preaching and healing during Sunday morning worship service since it would prolong the service.
