Elements of the project included the use of a training program developed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, a series of sermons by the pastor on deacons and lay ministry, and a more in-depth study on these subjects.  Methods of study included the project activities, the evaluation of these activities, and consultation of numerous bibliographical resources.  The thesis includes biblical, historical, and theological studies on deacon ministry.  As a result of this study, deacons were held in higher esteem by the congregation because of their increased visibility and involvement. Some inactive members did return to the church. The project was necessary because of both space and financial restrictions.  A task group was trained with a leadership training manual written by the author.  Participants in the training program were then enlisted to lead new adult small groups.  The project resulted in the establishment of several new groups. Over eight monthly sessions, ten teachers--five beginning and five experienced--reflected on the meaning of the vocation to teach in a Catholic high school.  In the experience teachers formed one another collaboratively through their questions, stories, examples and passion for the Catholic education project. Spiritual well-being is defined as Christlikeness related to mankind as created in the image of God.  The eight categories of Christian maturity measured by the Religious Status Inventory, developed at Fuller Graduate School of Psychology, further refine the definition of spiritual well-being. Each participant covenanted with other group members and developed personal learning goals related to ministry currently engaged in.  A theological and an educational base is described. It documents an action in ministry consisting of a series of ten experimental sermons which were intended to be therapeutic for listeners.  These sermons began with the ten 'irrational beliefs' from Albert Ellis' rational-emotive therapy, and reframed common psychological problems in terms of the Christian gospel. The author sought to discover whether or not such a ministerial identity appropriation took place; how students recognized such an appropriation; and to what extent the process of theological reflection in the seminar setting was critical to the act of appropriation. The developmental theories of E Erikson, J Fowler and H Straughn provide the framework for considering the development of an organic corporate entity such as a local congregation.  Reflecting on his experience as a church planter and his own maturation struggles, the writer develops the proposed paradigm.  Then, utilizing an open-ended narrative interview, the author presents case studies of three additional congregations to explore the applicability of his model.
