The project proposes a preaching strategy to prepare congregations for racial and ethnic change. Material developed includes: the context in which Finney developed his doctrine of Christian sanctification; the abolition themes of Finney's sermons and theology; the application of Finney's themes to current settings; and the development of a preaching strategy to prepare for racial and ethnic change. Subjects were pre-tested and post-tested for frequency of practice of four spiritual disciplines (solitude, meditation, study and service) and spiritual well-being (SWB) using Ellison's SWB scale. Subjects were instructed in a thirteen-week course on those disciplines.  Differences on pre- and post-test scores were observed to evaluate the effect of changes in frequency of practice and SWB responses. Analysis revealed that participants experienced personal growth and integration as an ongoing process with six distinct phases, and that other persons play an important role in that process. Participating in the research were women from Roman Catholic and Protestant denominations. An awareness of the dimensions and possibilities for personal meaning, along with a preparation for the use of new hymn images, is explored in a series of congregational workshops.  A phenomenological approach is applied to this qualitative research project. The thesis documents the breakthrough experience in the lives of these women as they name the causes and consequences of their growing feminist self-awareness and the relationship of their self-awareness to their own spiritual journey.  The theory of Bernard Lonergan's self-appropriation of the human subject undergirds this study.  This theoretical framework shapes the process of theological reflection used with the women and sets the scene for an understanding of emerging consciousness in women that is liberating.  A feminist methodology is employed which situates the research in the experience of the researcher.  The findings of this study confirm that there is an emerging feminist consciousness among Catholic women which needs to be nurtured by conscientized and sensitive ministers. The practice of ministry in a congregation made up of people of a variety of ethnic origins will encounter problems resulting from ethnic and cultural differences.  In order for the congregation to be integrated into a working and worshipping whole, these differences must be identified and appreciated.  In-depth interviews of eight family units chosen from the traditional congregation and recent-comers from Guyana were conducted, followed by three group meetings.  Transcripts were analysed, and the findings compared with the experience of similar congregations. Ten men and women in the Dalton District of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church committed four weeks to the project.  The district superintendent was the convener, a co-participant, and provided leadership by precept and example.  Sessions included theological foundations of wellness, a medical evaluation of each participant, identification of healthy eating and exercise habits, and application of learnings to the local church and community.  All participants met at least one of their goals relating to diet and/or exercise. Through the implementation of the program, some of the elderly's accumulated unmet needs were satisfied by their enjoyment of the programmed activities. God has commanded Christians to love others.  Love must be demonstrated through behavior, and behaviors are learned through opportunity and practice.  This project gives participants a format which facilitates such practice.  The major method to accomplish the thesis is a devotional guide which daily highlights a characteristic of love, and provides opportunity for participants to contract ways to demonstrate that characteristic.
