Supervision/consultation is viewed as a continuum for training and sustaining ministering persons, its function being similar to pastoral care: healing, sustaining, guiding, reconciling. A definition, theology, and methodology are developed for pastoral supervision/consultation, and project materials and related resources used during the 1979-81 supervision/consultation with field education students and clergy in a pastoral counseling training program with the author form the appendix. The thesis/text is divided into two parts which address the sociological and theological dimensions of the church, respectively. Part one deals with the context of the church in America, the development of denominationalism, and the church and culture in terms of the church as a product of culture. Part two deals with the church in the New Testament, the views of Luther, Calvin and Wesley on the church, Avery Dulles' models of the church, and considers the views of Karl Barth and H Richard Niebuhr. The thesis/text suggests that our understanding of the church is best expressed in dialectical terms. God is the one who calls us, loves us and reaches out to us first, but there is also a human response. The 'true church' is invisible, but it is also visible."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717876446265344,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:25:15.544Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:32:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1e8b8ab9-e7c0-4846-9807-246e5409949a","accessControl_ssim":["0e0e5fd2-5464-4fbf-bc93-24a13dabc76d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Synodical authority and congregational diversity in the Christian Reformed Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:02:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["77191bee-e710-4ed0-8636-99300f45389d"],"hasLease_ssim":["6f486470-b61a-45a4-a5e1-d12d90cb522a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Clarence Curtis Goen"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Three pastoral diagnostic variables - communion, repentance, and grace or gratefulness - of the seven pastoral diagnostic variables designated by Paul W Pruyser are found to be significant themes in the life stories of these recovering alcoholics and are used effectively as counseling parameters. Four of these alcoholics in long-term sobriety are interviewed in oral and written sessions. Two of them in short-term sobriety are seen in either short- or long-term counseling. Thematic creative stories and the Pastoral Diagnostic Inventory are helpful tools in clarifying these themes in the counseling of these two alcoholics."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717703926153216,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:22:31.016Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:19:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bab721ff-c53c-4200-b164-447bf56fe3a7","accessControl_ssim":["4bbadf12-76da-4a1f-bece-bf9660e3461e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The preaching of and the development of liturgical Advent, Christmas, worship services for College Park United Methodist Church, 1983-84"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:30:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5332d09a-84e8-462a-9834-1189bcec1b62"],"hasLease_ssim":["e1949124-e5e6-4738-868d-9ae3e9144b13"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Laurence Hull Stookey"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. To accomplish this purpose, the questionnaires were used with a select group of thirty people. This questionnaire was distributed before a worship service during Advent. Through the worship experience, sermon, and group discussions, all aspects of these liturgical seasons were covered. The preacher covered the historical and theological meaning of the seasons in the group discussions. The group explored the baptism and eucharist sections of the Faith and Order document Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry, and provided feedback to the World Council of Churches. The denominations represented were: Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Progressive Baptist, Southern Baptist, and United Methodist. The project brings together some basic aspects of sacramental theology, the historical journeys of the various liturgical traditions represented in the group, and the convergence in sacramental thought that characterizes the present ecumenical community. Each session included Bible study, class exercises, the use of student journals, and assigned tasks to be accomplished between class sessions. The course introduced the concept of transition moments as life situations requiring decisions, identified examples of those experiences in a midshipman's career, and related the Christian gospel to those moments as a resource for personal and spiritual growth. A student evaluation of the course indicated that the concept of transition moments was understood and applied to personal experiences within the brigade. Further, the evaluation suggested that once having identified transition moments in their daily routines, midshipmen valued the scriptural material as potential resource for information."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127156099645441,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:39:26.190Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
