Revivalists manipulated secular forms of communication attracting new converts into the religious fold. Fundamentalists formed political organizations, such as the Moral Majority and the Religious Right, and advocated for purist ideologies. In recent years, scholars and media outlets have commented on the power and influence of the extremist leaders born out of this movement in the present day; however, often ignored are the self-identified moderate Evangelical leaders. These religious leaders claim to preach beyond American politics, focusing instead on protolyzing to the “Nonchurched Harrys” of the world. Both rabbinic literature and early Islamic jurisprudence deploy similar rhetorical strategies to justify exemption from ritual obligations based on gender. In response, Jewish and Muslim feminists have utilized similar methodological approaches to reinterpret rulings on ritual obligation to empower women and LGBTQ people. Yet existing methods of religious feminist interpretation fail to consider whether utilizing liberal feminist theory can elicit change. Antiblackness, the inability to see Black humanity, is an undeveloped topic in Muslim spaces. In this thesis Black belonging is studied because despite Muslims having an identity construct that embraces all humanity, preliminary studies indicate that this construct is not actualized in Muslim schools. To understand this phenomenon and fill this research gap I conducted a mixed method study to understand alumni’s sense of belonging and what role antiblackness plays in their sense of belonging at U.S. Islamic schools. After describing the methodology, five themes are discussed: the deep sense belonging that Prophet Muhammad developed specifically around Black community members, the role antiblackness plays in and around us, the ease by which students use disparaging language around blackness, the inability to see Black American Muslim culture as a legitimate Muslim culture with history, norms, and traditions, and the importance of schools having an ummah embracing identity. The findings explored how hypervisibility and invisibility shaped how students experience school and their sense of belonging. To conclude, using Islamic sources and the data gathered six data-driven recommendations were made to help Muslim education leaders address antiblackness and develop a sense of belonging amongst Black students"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-EDU/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["rukayat.yakub@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836652645639520256,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T18:47:36.306Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-23T01:33:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:45:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"aa4978c1-5e9d-459d-9948-e57baa7068bf","accessControl_ssim":["8643f01a-724b-44bd-a46e-a4dce3ee7b71"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["1a8aaf77-5eff-4127-938d-84f35ee1b862"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["1a8aaf77-5eff-4127-938d-84f35ee1b862"],"depositor_ssim":["irum.maharaj@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["irum.maharaj@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Al-Zāhir wa Al-Bātin--The Manifest and the Hidden: A Response to J. The use of rhetorical criticism by Phyllis Trible enriches the discourse, providing ways a writer may create a literary sanctuary to allow others reconsider their spiritual heritage. This approach not only facilitates individual spiritual reflection but also fosters a broader dialogue about faith in the modern public square."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-NC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["gmostowski@pts.edu"],"_version_":1797406992953769984,"timestamp":"2024-04-26T14:14:45.309Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-19T19:26:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T15:57:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f2c8bd8a-de0b-48ad-8060-c468db916499","accessControl_ssim":["efd6eeac-ed75-46ce-88ca-24d5c39dd72a"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["a54a7ed2-3e8a-4084-bcb1-39bd4a50686f"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["a54a7ed2-3e8a-4084-bcb1-39bd4a50686f"],"depositor_ssim":["juan.thomas@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["juan.thomas@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Preaching Good News to the Poor! This paper argues that prophetic preaching about economic justice can transform the community. In this context, I define prophetic preaching as speaking to or addressing the systemic barriers that have historically, culturally, politically, physically, mentally, spiritually, and economically, undervalued, underestimated, or marginalized people of African descent (in the United States) with the purpose of offering an analysis and critique for correction. This paper will address prophetic preaching with a lens towards an analysis and critique of what is required to preach prophetically concerning the economic barriers that prevent economic justice. Thus, prophetic preaching about economic justice to achieve economic justice requires three pillars to ultimately transform the community: 1) the preacher must have a growing knowledge of financial literacy: meaning an understanding of how the economy functions on a micro and macro level. 2) The preacher must advocate for progressive public policy in the context of a local, state, national and/or global economy. 3) Finally, the preacher must demonstrate the ability to utilize substantial financial resources to empower their ministerial context which optimistically includes the broader community. Ultimately, this paper argues that for preachers to develop sermons that centers issues of economic justice, the preacher must first begin by striving to be financially literate.
