Despite the deeply emotional and spiritual nature of funeral service, many practitioners do not explicitly connect their faith commitment with their professional practice. This research argues that structured ministerial formation can enhance personal fulfillment and improve the ability of Christian funeral directors to serve grieving families with greater compassion and effectiveness.\r\n\r\nThrough qualitative research with a select group of funeral directors and an analysis of literature on faith-based grief counseling and accompaniment, the study explores the intersection of faith and funeral service. The primary audience includes Christian funeral directors in a specific region of the United States seeking a faith-integrated vocational approach. Secondary audiences consist of educators and leaders in the funeral industry, such as accrediting bodies and professional organizations, who may consider incorporating faith-based ministerial formation into professional training. Additionally, the findings may hold relevance for funeral professionals from other faith traditions.\r\nThe thesis pursues three key outcomes: (1) a critical examination of the relationship between funeral direction and faith within professional education programs, (2) an analysis of the perspectives and aspirations of Christian funeral directors integrating faith with vocation, and (3) a preliminary vision for a structured ministerial praxis that positions funeral service as a transformational ministry rather than merely a transactional profession.\r\n\r\nThis study acknowledges certain limitations, including the relatively small sample size and demographic constraints reflecting the predominantly white, male funeral industry in suburban Chicago. However, it incorporates insights from female and racially diverse funeral directors to provide a more representative perspective. While striving for diversity, equity, and inclusion, the findings are not presented as universally applicable beyond the study’s participants. Additionally, while the research does not introduce a tested vocational integration workshop, it lays the groundwork for future development.\r\n\r\nBeyond its direct ministerial implications, this research offers broader applications, encouraging professional funeral associations to consider faith-informed training programs. It also invites faith communities to recognize funeral service as a ministry, offering affirmation and ongoing support to practitioners. Although focused on Christian funeral directors, the study anticipates that its insights may resonate with professionals from other religious traditions, ultimately fostering a more holistic and spiritually grounded approach to funeral service.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["plesefuneral@gmail.com"],"_version_":1831416556034195456,"timestamp":"2025-05-06T23:42:12.131Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-05-06T21:45:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-06T21:45:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2df18cb5-7981-4c6b-87df-5c6e0100bc7e","accessControl_ssim":["03988774-9096-43fb-b7ee-a380a6fa2417"],"depositor_ssim":["plee@pts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["plee@pts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Gender Prejudice and a Woman’s Call to Ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-05-06T21:45:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-06T21:45:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9111c814-f3d0-474c-9509-ad7eb80ddcdf"],"hasLease_ssim":["bdea7dc7-4c54-466e-b847-603cde66a7f8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Many churches point to certain scriptures to undergird and provide support for gender prejudice in the rejection of a woman’s call to ministry. This research project will consist of a quantitative and qualitative framework. I will investigate various scriptures used against women and other scriptures that provide evidence that God calls women to preach the gospel, and I will conduct interviews with mid- and late-career women clergy. I argue that some scriptures have been taken out of context to push a false narrative intended to silence a woman’s call to ministry, past and present. The results I hope to discover will show that through discussing causes and challenges that arise for female clergy due to gender prejudice and sharing the reflections of the call and experience in ministerial leadership from mid- and late-career women clergy, it will be possible to educate, identify important areas of support for, and encourage early-career female clergy to inform the development of a mentoring network across denominations. It addresses two key research questions: (1) the internal and external factors influencing church multiplication, and (2) the role of theological\r\nframeworks in shaping these practices. \r\n\r\nBridge Church, grounded in the Gospel of the Kingdom theology, emphasizes relational depth, spiritual formation, and organic leadership transitions. While this approach fosters sustainable, mission-aligned growth, it faces challenges such as delayed multiplication and leadership fatigue, often influenced by life-stage constraints and strong relational bonds. In contrast, Green Hill Church adopts principles from the Church Growth Movement (CGM), prioritizing structured training, hierarchical efficiency, and rapid multiplication. Though effective in achieving numerical growth, this pragmatic approach can result in emotional strain, fragmented relationships, and premature leadership assignments.\r\n\r\nThe findings indicate that sustainable church multiplication requires a balance of theological integrity, relational trust, structured leadership pathways, and life-cycle sensitivity. Integrating the relational and theological depth of Kingdom theology with the strategic clarity of CGM offers a promising framework for growth. Over forty participants from the six churches took part in interviews, Zoom meetings, and roundtable discussions which addressed the key research problems. The information from those interviews was shared in a group setting that was particular to each individual church.\r\n\r\nThree major takeaways include how pastors dedicated specific time to clarify the vision and direction of their churches; how their visions were communicated through verbal and nonverbal messaging; and lastly, implementing and evaluating the processes and efforts utilized from the vision that resulted in discipleship and commitment to the church. It explores contemporary Christian scholarship regarding the Bible and women, children, and those living with physical or emotional disabilities and argues that patriarchy and ableism—in scripture and tradition—have long silenced marginal voices. Using examples from her own creative work, the author maintains that literary fiction can be a powerful tool to give voice to—and inspire—those who have historically been marginalized and ignored. The theological essay is followed by an original work of literary fiction, The Third Testament, a collection of biblical short stories, sonnets, and a novella which brings to life the hidden voices of scripture."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["whitejoann@hotmail.com"],"_version_":1831108871218790400,"timestamp":"2025-05-03T14:11:41.025Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-05-01T19:37:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-01T20:03:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2ca2d8b6-3909-4abd-baee-bdfebb00df31","accessControl_ssim":["d844b4f0-401a-444c-9395-e25ab2cee888"],"depositor_ssim":["aholbrook@impactclt.org"],"depositor_tesim":["aholbrook@impactclt.org"],"title_tesim":["Steps for Generating Collaborative Action to House the Vulnerable in Charlotte, NC."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-05-01T19:37:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-01T20:03:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["94a914ea-5344-4971-a485-6712f164b13e"],"hasLease_ssim":["d67e74cd-07b6-422e-b477-45026d6b6dd9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Grounded in theological reflection and historical case studies of Nehemiah and Reformation-era Geneva, the paper analyzes one congregation’s partnership with nonprofits and city leaders to build housing for vulnerable neighbors. Through qualitative research—including interviews, surveys, and focus groups—the study identifies key steps that catalyze collective impact. Findings highlight how awareness, alignment, and action can transform both communities and congregations, offering a replicable model for churches seeking to serve the common good in urban settings."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-EDU/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["aholbrook@impactclt.org"],"_version_":1830949798141755392,"timestamp":"2025-05-01T20:03:17.117Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
