Alcoholism is described as 'a chronic illness, psychic or psychosomatic, which manifests itself as a disorder of behavior,' and 'that exceeds customary dietary use of compliance with social customs of the community and that interferes with the drinker's health, or the social or economic functioning.'  it is America's number four health problem, but Black America's number one health and social problem. In the chapter 'From the Roots to the Vines,' the project analyzes the use of alcohol in pre-colonial Africa as a convivial beverage for celebration and how the Triangle Trade became 'a geometrical maze' for Blacks with slavery, alcohol, and profits as partners. The report outlines biblical and theological bases for the concept of counseling through preaching.  Methodology entailed determination of issues people wanted addressed; preparation of sermons based on those concerns and summarizing feedback received by several means. The project is limited to funding the local church, while recognizing that stewardship includes the totality of life in response to God as Creator and Redeemer. The study includes an overview of the history of church funding, an analysis of current funding programs, and a comparative inquiry of local churches, ministers and funding practices in the North Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. In addition to conducting extensive biblical, historical, and doctrinal research, the student delivered weekly children's sermons over a four year period in consultation with a core of selected lay persons. Information was obtained by open-ended interviews with Protestant Episcopal, United Methodist, and United Presbyterian clergymen (five from each denomination). Undergirding the conceptual framework of the study are developmental psychological findings primarily of Erikson, Levinson, Gould, Sheehy, Howe, and Sherrill. Through the commitment to these members, the parish seeks to fulfill the mission of Jesus to love and compassion with the less fortunate in society. Volunteers were placed in control or experimental groups. The latter is a ministry base reflection group studying parish ministry in the light of the gospel and tradition of the church. The content of their meetings is outlined, and several assessments of the project are given. The candidate reflects on the project one year after its completion, and suggests a revised model.  It is concluded that Christian realization through families is a valid model for growth and learning in a congregation. Leadership is judged, consciously or unconsciously, by the persons who experience it.  It is the view of the writer that evaluations ought to be planned to maximize learning and growth.  The process of disciplined reflection is rooted in church history and is modelled in the biblical story.   Such a process can be a creative avenue for growth and change.  These experiences need not be feared nor do they need to be destructive.  It is possible to teach groups and individuals how to evaluate people and programs constructively.  The action research project attempts to illustrate, through the avenue of ministry, a process for evaluating pastoral leaders in the context of the congregation.  Fifteen Mennonite pastors volunteered to participate in an evaluation with their congregations.  Four types of evaluations were designed and tested. The results are described and evaluated.  The text included a statement outlining the conceptual basis for evaluation.  Results reinforce the thesis that evaluations can have a positive effect for the pastor and the congregation.
