Suffering represents various subjective emotions reflecting absent validation for the pastors. Clergy question their meaningfulness as well as confront the violation of deeply-held expectations regarding their vocation and results of their labors. Clergy seek to improve their circumstances by turning to spiritual, social, emotional, and/or intellectual resources. Greater healing may result, though, as clergy become 'co-creators' of meaning with God. Clergy may eventually integrate the suffering for an enriched faith perspective and enhanced gifts for spiritual leadership. A six-week format of two preachment phases and four workshop sessions were employed to develop a tithing-system consciousness in the sample population.  The quantitative method included a four-part pre-test/post-test experimental survey design. A seven-week stimulus was implemented.  It included an orientation, seven classes, four sermons, a mentoring component, and a graduation ceremony.  Quantitative and qualitative analysis instruments-- pre-test/post-test and interviews-- showed a statistically significant increase in the sample population's participation in church activities and knowledge of church terms. Mount Aery Baptist Church, a 77-year old, 1400 disciple African-American congregation, had recently experienced rapid growth.  As a result, its leadership (Pastor and Officers) was often unable to adequately address the numerous congregational needs in a timely manner.  Also, of great concern within the congregation was the qualifications needed to address those needs. The multi-faceted responsibility of pastoring a local church makes the practice very difficult. A study of the development of pastoral care in scripture and history led the author to define pastoral care as leading people into holy living through their faith in Christ within the context of the local congregation provided a foundation for developing praxis for the responsibility. The mutual ministry of the people provides care that has been the objective of pastoral visitation. A sample of congregants was recruited and afforded a treatment consisting of eight seminars, a series of topical sermons and other support. Through the administration of a pre-test and post-test the project measures the discipleship growth of the experimental group as compared with two control groups within the context and three control groups external to the context. An observable shift from worship to entertainment in the music ministry of the church led to the implementation of a series of workshops and seminars targeting a test group of musicians and singers, who were then educated in the history and development of the African-American Spiritual and Gospel music worship traditions. It was started to give rabbinic students the opportunity to obtain practical rabbinical experience under the guidance and supervision of a trained rabbinic mentor. In this thesis, the author has done an evaluation of the rabbinic residencies program as to its effectiveness in positively influencing the professional and personal growth of participating rabbinic students.
